      Strange Coloured Wiring LJ2/1A

      Hi,

I wonder if someone can help? I have had no working landline telephone for about a year (at least no junk calls lol)

I have just switched to Sky Talk/Line Rental/Unlimited Broadband (also with a new phone number I requested). After I told SKY the number does not work-my phone is dead (done all the obvious tests) they said their test says it's the wiring in my house!

I have a basic system from telegraph pole to my LJ2/1A and broadband working fine and no drop outs (sadly, only 4mb and 0.66 upload)

I have purchased a new LJ2/1A to see it its the old one that's the problem.

I seem to have wiring that nobody else has!
From outside I get 1xBlack, 1xWhite, 1xGreen and 1xOrange (all solid colours not stripped)

      Any ideas where these go?

Currently I have Orange on pin3 and White on pin5 and gets my broadband up and running but no telephone dial tone.

      Can anyone help me?

      Thanks/Paul.

2 & 5 is the line pair, the wire in 5 is correct as your BB is working (BB can work off one leg), so you need to trace the wire for connector 2. Lift up handset & do trial & error until you get D/T.

I think taking the Orange off 3 and putting it on 2 will solve your problem. Orange/White is the normal colour code for the main connection.

      Re: Strange Coloured Wiring LJ2/1A

Thank you both for your replies.

I already swapped the Orange cable from pin3 to pin2 after reading more on the net. The Black and Green cables are not connected (not used anymore?)

Phone is as dead as a brick (tried two) both are silent, not even a hiss!

The phone worked until I joined TalkTalk. Hopefully at least the BB seems stable now i'm with Sky (TT are awful).

Any ideas I could try as i'm sure the minute I agree to send an engineer out they will find a way to charge me (not good as unemployed for last 5 weeks)

      Thanks,
      Paul.

Do you have a multi meter? You are looking for 48-50v across a pair (DC). Try unplugging the phone & back in-if off hook for a while it will be "dead".

      Re: Strange Coloured Wiring LJ2/1A

      Hi, this is wierd:

If I phone my number on my mobile and I pick up the phone (doesn't ring) I get a lot of noise and clicking sounds. Neither phone end the 'call' and when i end the call on my mobile the phone goes dead again!

Also I tried removing the white cable on pin5 and placed it on each one whilst tapping the receiver on the phone to get a D/T but nothing.

Any other ideas I can try?

Did you try the green and the black on number 2. As I said white and orange are normal, but as it is not working it could be either of the others. I would leave the white on 5. as if your broadband is working it must be correct.

Those wires look pretty chewed up, are you using an IDC tool?

Hi, yes I used an old plastic punch down tool I had from my old IT company I ran. Not tried the unused wires - I thought they are not required these days?

      Thanks
