      Results seem bizarre

I've done a number of tests at both the master socket and an extension and it seems that the attenuation seems to be lower at the extension than the master. I was under the impression that I would get the data the other way around. Sky have fixed my line speed as 1536kb, 550kb which seems rather slow compared to the suggested 3Mb connection and what I was getting through UKOnline. I've not been having any problems with the line and it was running smoothly before at 3Mb. See my data below:
      From test socket:
      Attenuation: Down 55, Up 32
Noise Margin: Down 22, Up 9

      From the extension:
      Attenuation: Down 48, Up 32
Noise Margin: Down 24, Up 10.5

Which would you consider the best position based on these stats? I've run it as a number of tests at different times during the day and the results are similar. What speed should I expect from this data?

Are you sure that is the extension as the figures from there are much better? Do you have a Test socket, if so plug in there and take your stats. Use only the ADSL cable supplied by Sky, do not use a plug in extension.

Positive it's the extension...I put it in myself
The test socket results were taken from the socket when I unscrew the outer socket from where the line comes in. I've tried the test at different times of the day on a number of different days and keep getting similar results. These results were taken when I had unplugged any telephones just to make sure there would be no interference. I've been left scratching my head and wondered whether anyone could shed any light onto it.

I think it is a case of not making proper contact in the Test socket. When you replace the faceplate and try the stats from there, what are they like?

      Re: Results seem bizarre

Just gone around and tried them again with similar results

      Main Box:
      Test socket:
      Attenuation: Down 55, Up 32.6
Noise Margin: Down 22.5, Up 9.5

      Box socket:
      Attenuation: Down 55, Up 32
Noise Margin: Down 21.6, Up 10

      From the extension:
      Attenuation: Down 48, Up 32.4
Noise Margin: Down 23, Up 9.5

I'm not really well up on this so it's really puzzling me.

      Re: Results seem bizarre

It is puzzling, it is really impossible to get a reading better than the Test socket anywhere on your phone circuit. The Test socket is the gateway to the phone system so everything should be passing through it, thus you can't get a better result from anywhere else.
Where have you wired your extension too, the master faceplate? Or have you wired it into a junction or the main AB terminals.

I've taken a quick photo of it so colours aren't the best.

      Re: Results seem bizarre

I'd assume that there must be something wrong with the extension wiring that for some bizarre reason is causing the router to give a false attenuation reading.

Unless the router is connecting using G.dmt when plugged into the extension and adsl2+ in the test socket - but a 7dB change in attenuation would be more than I'd expect if that's the case.

That doesn't look like twisted pair telephone cable going to the extension socket.

It's twisted pair...just looks as if it isn't as I had it dangling down while I took a photo.
