I've installed and began running RouterStats -Lite, which I am going to monitor for a few days, just to get an idea of what's happening there before I hassle Sky.

Here's the results after an hour:

Doesn't look very good to me, although I'm no expert.

If you don't use the extensions you could pull the wires off the faceplate and tuck them out of the way, you should then get the same results from the faceplate as the test socket. Apart from appearance their is nothing to stop you using the test socket permanently.

Telephone lines use ducts which in some cases were laid 30-40 years ago. It is quite possible your line comes from the High Street in your map, which means it could be taking a very circuitous route

Note - When downloading always select the Custom install or you will end up with stuff you don't want.

That accounts for the difference in the noise margins in your stats. There is serious interference coming from somewhere. Possibly a fault on the line.

Thanks for the help mate, most appreciated.

Yeah, it isn't looking very good.

I am going to leave RouterStats -Lite going for a few days in order to provide fair and average results, although I think I have done everything I can at my end.

I'm purely using the test socket now, and have been since Thursday evening, as well as trying three (brand new from a sealed box) filters, with only one telephone and my router connected.

I have tried both routers, with almost identical results, although I get much better diagnostic information from the 2Wire.

So essentially there are no more variables or any more tests that I can conduct.

Do you (or anyone else for that matter) have any advice re. what to say to Sky?
Would it be best to report it as noise, i.e. a voice-related fault, or just go through broadband support?

Initially it is probably best to report it as intermittent noise on your voice line. If you are lucky they will find a fault and fix it. If they do your broadband will improve. If there is no success there, then you would have to go down the broadband route, which can be long and hard. Sorry I can't be of more help.

I have now reported it to Sky.

I hope that they can resolve it without having to go through a long and tiring process, however I am happy to take the time in order to resolve the problem.

Thank you again, you (and everyone else) have been extremely helpful.

I shall report back when I hear anything.
