Massive difference in max speed
This is a discussion on Massive difference in max speed within the Cabling and faceplate help forums, part of the Sky Broadband help and support category; I've downloaded and installed the suggested software. I'm currently using the first (white) Sky Netgear router - DG834GT which doesn't ...

Re: Massive difference in max speed
I've downloaded and installed the suggested software. I'm currently using the first (white) Sky Netgear router - DG834GT which doesn't appear to be on the list - assuming that I need to pick one of those with "sky" next to it. There is a Netgear DG934, but that doesn't appear to work, recording only a straight red line.
I'm due a phone call tomorrow from Sky just after I get back from work - I'll see what they say, and then I'll try to have a fiddle. If I can't get it to work with this router, I have a spare Sagem router, I can try that, but I generally tend to use the Netgear one as I can access the diagnostic stats on that one, albeit just as a snapshot.
Edit: got it! I chose the non-Sky V1 Netgear, and this time actually put the correct password in! This morning it is showing the connection speed as per the cap (1024) but with a NM of only around 10 - something is definately not right stillLast edited by Stumpy; 14-06-10 at 07:17 AM.

Re: Massive difference in max speed
It is on the list as 'Netgear DG834 (and -G, -GT, -N, PN) v1-4'. The only reason the DG934 is show with Sky Broadband against it, is because it is officially only available from Sky.

Re: Massive difference in max speed
Yes found it thanks (I edited my original post about it this morning when I realised ... must have cross posted
)
Its been running all day, and my noise margin had been generally fluctuating between 9 and 12 up until around lunch time, when it started dropping to closer to 7. Since then Sky has been on the phone again and asked me to connect direct to the test socket again, intimating that it may be interference from the faceplate. They have also changed my connection from G'dmt to ADSL2+, which has left the noise margin around 8, fluctuating less at the moment, and increasing my line attenuation from 52 to 55.5.
They also said that it was showing a high build up of errors in the faceplate - one of the reasons for changing to ADSL2 apparently was that is manages error clearing better.
It is showing an even lower max download speed now:
Down Up
SNR (dB): 8.3 16.0
Attn(dB): 55.5 34.4
Pwr(dBm): 13.2 3.6
Max(Kbps): 1292 864
Rate (Kbps): 1024 412
I am due to receive a new router in the next day or so, although have agreed to simply leave my connection alone until Wednesday afternoon so it can be monitored.
Unfortunately, their monitoring software apparently only monitors things like changes in IP addresses, connection speed, etc, it does not monitor the max speed available, so they had no record of its brief time at over 5mb max speed.
