      newbie cable query

      Hi All

Ive got Broadband Connect and its being activated tomorrow (anyone know roughly what time i can try it?)

Ive got a bt landline and i dont use the phone. Got it soley for internet purposes. Ive got 1 socket in the house, this is my master socket. My question is can i plug my modem directly into the socket without the microfilter, if i buy one of these cables ?? Telephone Socket to Modem Cord : Extension Cables & Kits : Maplin

also ive read about how you can remove the face plate and plug into the engineers test socket, what connection is that ?? sky have given me a piddly little cable so im gonna have to buy a longer one

also is sky connect any good ??

      Cheers !!

Just plug in your router, when its up and running the i indicator will be solid green.
You should have a microfilter for your Sky box.
Longer the extension the poorer your performance.
Sky Connect is a rebranded BT product and by all accounts aint very good, see other threads.

thanks but i want to know if i can plug the router directly into the socket (without using a microfilter for my sky box or phone)

and i will be using a 3 or 5m extension as the socket is right next to my radiator!

      Re: newbie cable query

Plugging in without a filter would make no diiference to performance, you would need a BT plug to RJ11 plug cable.

If you only have one telephone socket, plugging into the Test socket will make no difference. It is only when you have wired in extensions that this is an advantage.

I would not recommend the one you have linked to, it looks like standard telephone cable. I use one of these and it gives the same performance as the short Sky cable.
Belkin CC3011AED15 4.6m High Speed RJ11 to RJ11 Internet Modem Cable

Just plug it into a filter, or get one of these-

      Re: newbie cable query

Sky Connect is VERY BAD, there are many many posts about it on here, you should read some of them and then take the adivce in them whislt you still can, move to another ISP as quickly as you can during your cooling off period.

      Re: newbie cable query

Thanks for all your advice guys

I'm gonna buy a high speed adsl cable as isitme suggested, but I need it today, so Im gonna go and buy this one Ultra High Speed ADSL Cables : ADSL Accessories : Maplin

is this a decent cable ?? i havent got time to wait

also im gonna see in my 30 day cooling odd period whether sky connect is any good and if not change, but I live in a small village, whose exchange isnt open yet and all ISP's offer me pretty much the same speeds/package

one of my GF's mates who lives about 5 doors down has sky connect and he was saying to me last night that his is pretty good and his download speeds are quite good, so i will see !

How much??!! That cable looks the same as the one sat on my desk that we had on evalution, made zero difference to speed and the boot lost it's bond to the cable after a few weeks.

      Re: newbie cable query

I agree, it looks grossly overpriced. They appear to be charging a pound a metre and a tenner for 2 RJ11 plugs, which is a bit much.

It will do the job, but it is a rip off.
