      Sky upgraded me to Everyday

      Hi all
As per title but new Upgrade package is performing slightly worse than base has been .Stats since upgrade are :-

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1023 kbps 606 kbps
Line Attenuation 50.0 db 32.3 db
Noise Margin 6.3 db 12.5 db

Base stats never changed from Connection Speed 1120 kbps Noise Margin7.0db in over 2 years this was with ring wires on and router plugged into a long (15 m) cable reel type extension from main socket.
After research on forums have had main socket moved to a more central position to eliminate need for reel extension and some cable run on outside of building , disconnected all ring wires and fitted ADSL nation filtered face plate I now have the following stats which are with router plugged into test socket with short cable (noise is .5 to 1db lower if plugged through filtered face plate).

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1023 kbps 606 kbps
Line Attenuation 49.0 db 31.7 db
Noise Margin 23.9 db 12.5 db

My question is could I expect a better conection speed with the improved noise margin and if so what would be a realistc figure to aim for before phoning Sky .

Thanks in advance for any replies and help forthcoming.

Router is white netgear with V1.03.87 firmware

      ADSL2+ Speed Test
We estimate your line is capable of between 6mb to 7mb broadband on an ADSL2+ service.

This ADSL2 Line Speed Calculator is a best guess only, as to the broadband speed that maybe possible on your telephone line. The checker provides results of up to 24mb with the data that is made available to us. This is purely for indication only and should not be classed as the Line Speed that you would receive on any ADSL or LLU product from another ISP.

tbh I think 6 to 7meg is a little conservative. I get that on an attenuation of 45 ish.

An excellent example of how poor internal wiring can effect the broadband speed. Many would have come on here cursing and blinding at Sky for the poor service, never accepting that their own wiring was to blame. Well done in sorting it out.

A call to Sky should get you up to 6-7Mb, maybe more.

Thanks for the replies guys , just one more question :-

Given that the download / upload speeds have never changed and I have posted stats taken this morning taken from test socket below. Do these figures indicate that my line was and is capped when line speed was set 3years ago. I did have issues at first which turned out to be an issue with skys firmware on the netgear router where you had to turn UPnP off to stop dropouts.

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1023 kbps 606 kbps
Line Attenuation 48.5 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 26.9 db 14.0 db

      Thanks in advance

You are heavily capped at the moment, you should be more at something like 6Mb than the 1Mb you are currently on.

Re: Sky upgraded me to Everyday

Update :- Decided to bite the bullet and phone sky to do battle with tier 1and after reading some horror stories I have to admit I had been putting it off as long as possible, BIG MISTAKE !! Went something like this :-
      11:15
Call Tier1 Speak to guy called Pierce, nice lad very polite shame he`s a Chelsea fan but hey nobodys perfect. Explain problem as per O/P he has quick check at line and said OK I will pass you on to CST and while waiting to connect just asks me to confirm the router is connected to master socket to which I reply yes with the short cable and a filter ("forgot" to say it was a filtered faceplate, naughty me ) he said fine and phone starts to ring through to CST.
      11:25
Pick myself off the floor and a lovely girl called SAOIRSE (she tells me its an Irish name) is on line. After exchanging pleasentries and discussing the weather during which I discover she is in Somerset and she proceeds to tweak my settings (ooooer missus!!!!) and my connection shoots up to 5300+ Snr 7.1 . She tells me she set it at 6000 and thats what it settled at. After a short time she tries 8000 but it drops to 5100 Snr 6.9 . She is happy to set it at 8000 but advises me it may be unstable at buisier times (its now 11am Sunday morning) she then asks if she can put me on hold while she tries something else. She comes back on a few minutes later and says what she tried didnt work as well as she hoped which was changing the code on the line to ADSL2+ I think. Upshot is she confirms she has set my line on Gdmt at 6500 with DLM cancelled if that makes sense and said to give it a few days and see how it performs and if there was any probs to call back and they would look at it again . RESULT well done SKY cant fault the Tier 1 or the CST techs will monitor stats over the next few days and see how it performs, new stats posted below.
      11:45
      Finish call ....JOB DONE

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 5312 kbps 608 kbps
Line Attenuation 49.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 7.1 db 20.0 db
