Look at the wire you have, you will have orange/white, orange, blue/white, blue. A pair is of the same colours(so all orange or blue), twisted pair makes a difference to ADSL!! An Openreach tech did this??!!

No, it was like this when we moved in in June 08. At the extension end there are two blue/white cables and two orange/white cables, but only one of each at the master end, have they been cut into the sheathing? If i cut the sheath back and reveal another blue/white and orange/white would swapping the connected orange/white at each end with the spare blue/white have the desired effect..... I think i may just call an local tel engineer out, i have a nasty habit of making things worse when i fettle.

Thanks very much for your help, much appreciated, so for clarification if i swap the w/o for the b/o wire or vice versa to have matching wires at each end i should be ok?

Sorry for all the questions, you must get tired of numpties like me.

Re: Issue with my master socket

Well, more investigating showed that the other blue/white and orange/white wires had been cut back into the sheath at the 'master' socket end, so all is well there.

But then i also find this (it was taped up, so i stripped it back):

In the back of a cupboard in the dining room the wires had been spliced like this between the 'master' and 'extension'. So at least i know that if i go blue/white blue/white at each end for twisted pairs they will be properly connected. But it doesnt look so clever so would it be worth getting some new cable and re-wiring directly between the two with twisted pairs? The cables seems quite old and has perished slightly.

Re: Issue with my master socket

Well reagrdless of the dodgy connection above i swapped the wires at each end to get twisted pairs, blue/white lines on 'B' and white/blue lines on 'A' at each end. Here are stats before:

      And after:

To those who know these things is there a discernable difference? Just for information, the BT speedtester is saying my line is currently being profiled to 2mbps by Sky.

Also in the master socket the incoming BT cable has an orange and white wire connected to the socket, there are a green and black cable rolled up not connected to anything, what are these?

It is not being profiled by Sky. The BT system profiles your line according to its condition. If you connection remains stable for a couple of days, the profile will rise. If it does not then it may be stuck. If this is the case the only way it can be fixed is by BT on a request from Sky.

Re: Issue with my master socket

Oh ok, well since i put a new cable in between the master and extension earlier it has changed between 250kbps and now 135kbps so at least it isnt stuck, just hope it goes up now the line is finally stable after me fettling for the last 2 days.
