Testing by shorting If you have a multi meter stick it on DC and check the voltage, should be around 48V. If you have no dial tone at the test socket this isn't your problem anyway-call the service provider. It is not illegal to remove the back plate but is against the T&C's of the line provision. If the line is dead you will get a priority repair anyway.

I don't see what the problem is either. Whether the line is dead or the master socket (rear plate) is knackered it's still down to the provider to fix, there is absolutely no need to bother testing the incoming wires, it really isn't his responsibility.

Voltage on both wires is zero so I will get bt out to sort it. Looks like another day off work sitting in the house, if I'm luck they will narrow it down to a 8-6 slot

      Re: Master socket problems!

Whatever you do, don't tell BT that you had the master socket off and tested the incoming cable pair, which is why you're sure the line is faulty, unless you want to be liable for the full cost of putting it right.
