      Extension for broadband only

Can someone advise what kit i will need -
I need to run an extension from my BT master box to another distant part of the house where my PC and router are located, this new socket will only be used for broadband connection. I keep hearing about using twisted wires etc, the main thing i wish to do is keep the speed up and avoid any drops in perfomance. thanks

Any reason why the router is next to the PC apart from so the PC can be hooked up via ethernet?

If you want to use ethernet you could instead of putting a new phone extention in, which could comprimise your speed if the wiring isn't top notch and try a set of powerline homeplugs.

These things turn your house electrical wires into ethernet cables and so you can stick your router near the existing phone socket and have one of the plugs near your router and phone socket and the other one near your PC.

A full kit of 2 plugs is here for less than 40

Max Value 85 Mbps Home Plug Double Unit Pack: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

The beauty of these is that if you need more connections near your PC you can just add a network switch to the plug and hey presto tons of connectivity.

Also you can add a plug to each room so you can have ethernet all over the house.

It should be less hassle than having to put an extention in.

Agreed, but a lot more expensive than a few metres of CAT5e cable which is what is needed if the op does wish to run an extension.

      Re: Extension for broadband only

Keep the router as close to the socket as possible and use a long Ethernet cable to run to the computer. You can run 100m of ethernet without any loss of performance.

If it isn't convenient to run a long ethernet cable then a hybrid set-up would be the solution. Put the router somewhere convenient between the computer and phone socket, trying to keep the phone extension as short as you can and have the rest run as ethernet.

For example many people have their master socket in the hall so it isn't practical to have the router there. Run a twisted pair telephone cable to the nearest room where it is convenient then run an ethernet cable from there to where your computer is. You are much better off with 5m of telephone cable and 20m of ethernet than you are with 25m telephone cable even if it is twisted pair.

Twisted pair-the 2 wires are twisted around each other to help reduce interference. CW1308 and CAT5/CAT6 is twisted pair.

      Re: Extension for broadband only

Thanks for the replies, looking at my set up the best solution seems to be the following

Install an ADSL nation NTE-2005 faceplate to my master
Connect my tephone up to one of the sockets
On the other , run an ethernet cable directly to ther part of the house where my PC and router is , this is about 30m away at the back of the house.
I do not have any telphone extensions off my master, however I do need to connect my Sky HD+ box up to the master, does thi sgo in with a filter or anything with the phone one?

Does this sound OK, + Any ideas on the best way forward would be appreciated, and can I also order long lengths of Ethernet cable in black from anywhere and the terminate myself although I am not sure what internal colours i need to use ?

      Re: Extension for broadband only

Black ethernet cable (CAT5e), max we can do in 1 length is 40M(just order 2 x 20m & email us your order number with a note) :-

      CAT5e Cable, External

If you wanted that terminating to RJ11 we can do that FOC for you. (we'd actually terminate to RJ45 at one end so the plug is firmer in the NTE2005 (BT ADSL Faceplate for NTE5 Linebox, 6 Way Version(NTE2005) Your Sky box would simply plug into the phone socket on the faceplate, if the current extension for sky isn't the doubler type you would need one of these :BT Double Adaptor

      Re: Extension for broadband only

Thanks, a couple of final questions, on the sky sagem router it uses a small grey cable that goes into an adaptor then into the phone socket extension, when i use an ethernet cable at the master socket to the router and then a direct link via ethernet cable to my pc, does this mean i can do away with the small grey cable, e.g use a total ethernet cable set up.
Finally is it ok from performance point to run an ethernet cable from the master plate to the router which is some 30 meters away then straight into my pc?, my BB speed is dreadfull with just 0.41mb, so I can't aford any drop
