Possible problem with face plate on master socket

Hi been having problems with drop outs on my router for the last couple of weeks Which may be a problem with the master socket. I was advised by sky to try it in the test socket which I have done. If it is the the socket do I need to just replace the face plate or do I need to replace the back box and the telephone cable aswell.

      thanks

I assume that you are now connected to the test socket and the problem has not re-occured? By "faceplate" do you mean a filter faceplate or just the normal one that comes with the box?

Re: Possible problem with face plate on master socket

O.k then. First of all do you have any extension telephone sockets? (this may seem a silly question but bear with me)
If you do make sure you now have no dial tone at any of them,as you are using the test socket.
If you do have extensions, remove the ring wire from "3" on the faceplate that is now hanging out of your master socket.
If you have no extensions then there will be no wires on the faceplate.

If you want to replace the faceplate, I would change the whole socket, but please be aware that you are not supposed to touch or change the master socket yourself, but lots of people do

Cheers for your help Brian yeah I do have another socket in the bedroom. This might sound weird but not sure where the wire is coming from as there is no visable wire coming out of it. What would be esier changing just the face plate or the whole socket and would it make much difference.

Re: Possible problem with face plate on master socket

Changing the whole socket is easy, so do that as you will get a new faceplate as well.
I am a bit concerned about this extension socket, could you check and make sure there is no dial tone when you connect a phone to it, there should not be as you are using the test socket. If there is this maybe the root of your problem.

I can confirm there is no dial tone in the other socket.

Re: Possible problem with face plate on master socket

Thats good then. so to summerise.

      (1) changing the master socket is easy, you just buy a new one and reconnect the wires the same as the one you have now.

      (2) Do not connect any wire or wires to "3" on the faceplate of the master. This is the ring wire and causes many problems with Broadband, as your phones are connected thro filters you do not need it.

Just to cover all the bases, your extension is not a plug in one is it?

Not sure about Maplin (I'll have a look in a min) but you can get NTE-5 Master socket from ADSL Nation.

No Maplin do not appear to stock it
