      Extension/Rerouting Question

      Hi,

I currently havd the dropcable coming down my outside wall, coming into the house into a junction box (where the outside cable goes into a box and the inside cable goes out the other end to go to the master socket). I am about to start working from home and am using a spare bedroom upstairs. The bedroom window is about 2ft from where the dropcable comes from the pole.

Could i cut the dropcable about half way down my wall and just reroute it upstairs into my bedroom and then pull up all the internal cable and get rid. Therefore having my master socket upstairs.

I want to do this to maximise my speed and so i dont have to use wifi.

If i cant do this how would i do the an extension as i dont want to put an extension lead in the master socket then have to go all around the skirting board again and have internal cable on my outside wall.

      Matt

No real problem with that but as always the devil may be in the detail. What sort of drop wire do you have? Is it grey twin cable or black sheathed?

      Hi,

Its grey twin cable. Would it be better to cut it and reroute it to a bedroom? , or do an extension?

How would i do the extendion so the cable was outside cable?

      Re: Extension/Rerouting Question

      Proceed as follows.

      (1) If you do not already have these, buy a NTE-5 master and a filter faceplate.

      (2) Remove the joint box from downstairs, and fit this at the new location. Cut the drop wire (allow pleanty of slack) and route to new locatoin and connect to joint box.
      (3) Connect A and B of the NTE-5 master to the joint box (you will have already got some phone cable to reconnect the downstairs phones, so a bit of that will do)

      (4) You will now have a dial tone at the test socket of the new master. Now use the filter faceplate to connect the downstairs sockets using a new cable back down the outside wall.

      Re: Extension/Rerouting Question

I dont need a master socket at all downstairs. Could i not just cut the grey cable, reposition the junction box upstairs , and then reposition the master socket to upstairs and reconnect it all as it was downstairs?

Ive had a look at the junction box. There is 2 black things inside with a wire from the grey cable going into each , how do you open them black connectors?

Am i right in thinking that doing it the easy way and just running an extension would make the speed slower? , as its such a long cable?

      Re: Extension/Rerouting Question

Could you post a photo of the joint box? Assuming that you have only one phone socket (no extensions) then you could just relocate it up stairs. You are going about this the right way so dont worry

      Re: Extension/Rerouting Question

I dont have a camera unfortunately. Its square , about 2"x2" ,with a screw in the middle , as you take the screw out you have 2 square blocks in there , each has 1 wire of the grey cable and 1 wire from the white interior cable)

Ive tried to prise open the blocks but i would really have to force it to open it and if its only held together by it being closed id be knackered.

O.k they are a pair of crimps, dont try to open them as they are not intended to be reused. What sort of master do you have at the moment? Is it one with a removeable faceplate?

      Re: Extension/Rerouting Question

      Hi,

Its exactly the same as this but it has a BTOpenreach logo at the top.

So does the wire from the outside cable connect to the wire from the internal cable through that black connector?

      Re: Extension/Rerouting Question

Yes it connects through the crimps. The reason I asked all about your drop wire and what master you have is because the Grey twin drop will not connect to modern IDC connectors used in the lastest master sockets, but yours maybe o.k. Open the master up and check if the A and B connections are screw terminals. If they are, then you can just reloacte the master and connect the drop wire directly to it without using the old connector box at all.
