      White Cat5e

Does anyone know of any stores which sell Pure White Cat5/Cat6 cable, cut to length. I have a spare day tomorrow and and going to try and route a Cat5 cable from my PC to the router, but need a store which sells it. I know Maplins does but it may get a little expensive. The cable you run up to the the loft, then across there and back down into the next room, which must be a least 15m, and then if I have time, replace one run of my telephone wiring.
There seem the to be a lot of grey and cream type cables but none that are 'brilliant white' colour of Cat5.

      Re: White Cat5e

Had the same problem a while ago as we where trying to wire up the whole house for games with all the lads.

PC World and Maplins where charging the earth for it all ! So we just went for it and decided to make our own (well buy the cable and cut it to the lengths required and put the RJ45 plugs on)

Best thing we ever done and so easy with crimping tool (ebay!)

Word of caution if you ever do it the colour for the wires are as follows from left to right (we found out the hard way as tried to copy an existing cable and missed one of the colours which took us hours to figure out, it would see the router but not the broadband)

      White/Orange - Orange - White/Green - Blue - White/Blue - Green - White/Brown - Brown (568B..thx to RUNITDIRECT)

You can buy a massive reel of it online for peanuts and a bag of RJ45 connectors for nothing.

      Re: White Cat5e

There are two wiring standards, the above is not the most popular-swap the green & orange pairs over to get the most common(568B). The BT ADSL extension kits have white "CAT5", it's made to the same standard as CAT5(tight twists) but is only 3 pair!! Not a problem if only running 10/100 but not suitable for Gigabit obviously.

      NTE2000 ADSL Extension Kit, 30M

Of there is demand for white CAT5e then we'll stock it.

Changed layout to reflect the common standard 568B :

      White/Orange - Orange - White/Green - Blue - White/Blue - Green - White/Brown - Brown

      Re: White Cat5e

Just to add that I reguarly use External Grade Cat5e for installs as it's black and suitable for external runs - looks very similar to the digital co-ax that Sky use.

As such, come out with the sky cable downstairs and then cable-tie to the sky cables going up the wall, then a few cable tacks before coming back in upstairs / wherever else in the house you need to.

Much easier than an internal run and the black cable is unobtrusive on the outside of the house.
