      Sounds to me like the ADSL2+ frequencies are being lost through the 10m extension.

      As all the others are saying here, get a Filter faceplate and hook the router up to that, then run CAT5e upstairs to your computer

      If by the "orignal one" you mean your master socket? you need to do the following.

      (1) Get Openreach to replace this with a NTE-5 master socket. They will not do this for free, so you may think you would be better off to do it yourself, as Dave of Run-It-Direct has said, lots of people have done this.

      (2) Get a filter faceplate, put router close to master, and replace extension cable with network cable, from router to computer.

      yeah sorry, the "original one" is the main socket on wall where the cables actually enter the property, so yeah master socket, is it easy to do yourself with the right tools? i mean i dont mind having a go at things sometimes, but then again sometimes when i start a job i uncover more problems and think "is it worth it or wish i'd have got someone else to do this now"....

      It's very easy, if you look at the I Plate fitting guide on the front page of this site( Sky User - Help & Support for Sky & Sky Broadband - How To Fit The BT IPlate Or IPlate Alternative) you will see links to our I Plate alternative, basically a replacemnet NTE5 that is latest spec which comes with the required tool to push the wires in, there are also links to the Openreach faceplate that we sell.

      Re: adsl cable length?

      You have an old style socket so two choices, official route is to get Openreach in & pay for an NTE5, cira 145 IIRC, or, break the T&C's & fit an NTE5 yourself. You'll spend the next 10 years in prison and save a packet! Seriously, you are highly unlikely to get into any trouble with BT. To fit a faceplate you need an NTE5, you could of course fit the other option we have but that is not designed for extension wiring, the good thing about the NTE5/faceplate is that you can disconnect all internal wiring to see if a fault lies with your cabling or BT's.

      Re: adsl cable length?

      Just run through again what you plan to do? Replace the current master socket with an NTE5 & fit a faceplate? Do you plan to plug the router into this and run an ethernet cable up to the PC?(best solution) OR run an extension from the master to where the PC will be?

      Re: adsl cable length?

      What you first said;
      Replace the current master socket with an NTE5 & fit a faceplate so I can plug both my portable phone main base in and the router into this and then run an ethernet cable (less than a mtr) to first PC, then another ethernet cable about 10m's worth into another PC upstairs.
