Alot of noise on my line.
Wasn't sure where to put this thread, if not in the correct place, could mods please move. Thanks.
I have been having alot of noise on my line for as long as I can remember, but only now I feel I want/need to do something about it. When using the phone, there is alot of noise/interference and it is sometimes hard to hear the other end. Also broadband speeds are dire and especially as I am a gamer, the speeds often jump and oscillate.
Who do I ring up about this problem? I hope some BT engineer will come round and also take a look at the exchange to maybe tidy things up there?
Help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Alot of noise on my line.
What sort of noise? It could be a dodgy ADSL filter which is allowing the ADSL signal to leak, have you tested the filters elsewhere? Have you plugged directly into the test socket assuming you have an NTE5?

Re: Alot of noise on my line.
First of all, whats your setup like?
Wheres your mastersocket?
Are you connected to it?
Is there a filter connected directly into the mastersocket?
Do you have a TestSocket? Have you tried it?
Using extension cable?
Unfiltered socket or double filtered socket?
Does the noise go away when you remove the router?
If yes, contact sky.
If no, contact whoever your line rental is with.

Re: Alot of noise on my line.
Before you contact Sky (or any other ISP) you need to try and work out if the line, or your internal wiring is at fault.
(1) connect a normal wired phone to the test socket and ensure you have a dial tone. Using the same phone, and with the test socket still exposed, check that all extension sockets you may have are dead (no dial tone)
(2) With your phone pluged in to the test socket. dial 17070 and select option 2, You should now hear nothing but a low hiss, no crackle of pops. If you do hear a lot of noise, then report this to BT (or whoever you pay your line rental to) as line noise. dont mention broadband.
(3) If the line is o.k, connect your router and phone to the test socket using a filter. Dial 17070 option 2 again, the line should still sound the same, and there should be no effect on BB sync. If all is o.k, dial 17070 option 1, and when asked to "clear down" hang up. The phone will now ring, there should be no effect on bb sync.
If any of the tests in (3) fail then report this to you ISP.
If all test pass, but you have noise at an extension, then there is a problem with your internal wiring.Last edited by Brian69; 18-09-08 at 12:43 AM.
