      External Cable Fault.

This may prove of interest to those who suffer from telephone line noise.

A neighbour of mine came calling, would I take a look at his phone? (his wife knows my wife). They had Openreach out who could find no fault, they had reported the fault through their ISP (BT) but whenever the line was checked there was no fault, BB and the phone were fine, and now they were getting dark threats about being charged for any further visits.

The phone was fine when I checked it, as was BB (sync speed not all that good but it was stable) so I checked sockets etc just in case. It then started to rain "look at this" he said, BB lost sync and the phone was very noisy.
"It always does it when it rains" said he. I avoided asking why he did not tell me this in the first place, but went outside to have a good look at the external wiring.
The fault turned out to be a cable clip which had pinched the cable through the insulation, when the cable got wet it had an earth leak. A nice joint, and a new length of cable, problem solved. sync speed now 6560 on a 49db line, and I am not buying a pint in our local for at least a week

      Had the same fault.

i demanded that the line be replaced from the house to the pole. Found that the two core old grey cable had rubben away on the top of the shed and was through to the wire.

If you fixed it how is he going to stop being charged. Openreach have done nothing and everything is now fine

      Re: External Cable Fault.

They have had two visits from Openreach at no charge, both no fault found. He had been advised that any further visits would incur charges, and told that the fault was on his side of the NTE-5 master. So as they will not contact Openreach again they will be o.k

      Re: External Cable Fault.

If you suffer from a "noisy line when raining" fault, and you can get to your line, if the fault is a cable clip/worn cable, you can induce it by soaking the cable with salt water (salt water conducts much better than plain tap water) If the fault is there it will show up for sure.
