Have you tried another phone? Maybe a bit silly, but you have not turned off the ringer in the phone have you? My granddaughter did on mine and I lost a lot of much needed hair before I figured what had happened.

I assume BT have checked your line and found nothing wrong.

As above-check the obvious first-we've all done it!!(unlikely on more than one phone mind) It could just be a faulty cap in your matser socket-is it an NTE5? Do you access to a multi meter? If you ring your number from a mobile and pick up the phone do you get through?

Try the line with a standard corded phone, make sure nothing else on the line. If it still does it and you have a test socket try it in there (again with nothign but the phone connected) and if it does it still then call BT back. You must be sure its not your own equipment doing it before you can get BT in or you will incur the costs.

Have you got any microfilters that have known capacitors in? (most decent ones will, cheaper ones only have the ring wire connected). So the phone will ring but only once? The capacitor(which generates the ring from the A/C on 5 & 2) is in the back plate of the NTE5, your not legally supposed to touch that. However, filtered faceplates like the Pressac NTE2000 have a seperate bell capacitor in as only 5 & 2 are presented to the filter. If you don't already have one then that may be a cheaper way of finding out with the bonus of having a centralised filter(of course this may also increase your BB peformance depending on your actual installation). If it only rings once when plugged into the test socket then it can really only be a BT side problem.

BTW, a lot of DECT(cordless) phones do not need the ring wire so if you have one of those that may also help in diagnosis.

One other thing has just sprung to mind, water ingress can cause this, i remember having it on one job, water between 2 & 5 on a junction can cause ring problems, what is the speech quality like when you do get through? I'm not sure if BT's line test would detect this(probably not seeing as their ISDN line test couldn't detect an exchange fault causing lines to be engaged-nice two hour argument to India that one!!!)

      185 call out charge
That's a bit steep! You could get a new line put in for less than that

Just to repeat, have you tried another phone?

Take the phone you intend to use, to a neighbour and check it on their line (just plug it in and dial their number with a mobile) if it rings correctly, then plug it into your test socket and repeat (ring your own number obviously) If the fault is still there, then report it to BT, So long as you know your phone is O.k, and you have used the test socket, there will be no charge.
