My router is no more than two metres away from the socket. Again, i retried this by taking it out and plugging it back into the test socket, but again, no change. Sky BB have told me that i'm not capped, and my bandwidth does fluctuate between 1.8 and 2.2 mb which seems to support this (i think?!?). My router is hardwired, not wireless.

I don't know if you'll need this to see what the crack is, but i'll post it anyway.

What do you do if you don't have a test socket behind the master socked?

 <- they should bring this smiley in

I got a 1mbps gain when connecting to master socket as opposed to the extension (not hard wired- in fact there are no hard wired extensions running from master socket), so does this mean I need a filtered face plate? If so, why can't a regular in-line filter do the job?

When testing the test socket - do I have to use the micro filter, or can I plug the router straight into the socket?

You setup sounds very similar to mine (though you've reconnected 2 and 5 but it sounds like they're not needed) right down to the disconnected Sky+ box.

The comment about not using an IDC tool caused me to gasp, however! The gap between the blades is very precise designed to strip the wire sheath without breaking the core. A flat blade screwdriver can separate the blade adding to the impedence of the connection. In your case, I'm sure you were meticulous, however.
I'm just reading through this thread because I have line noise . . but noticed the tool issue . . I have the Krone tool but another tool that can do the job is the flat (not sharp ) side of a stanley knife blade!

Re: Try your master socket for better results

Ive been pulling my hair out over the constant disconnects and slow speeds the problem was down to the 2 extra wires connected to the extension.

Now they have been cut, i have a stable connection and my speed has jumped from 6800 to 10788

      I am over the moon
