There is always a master, I think what you mean is you don't have an NTE5.

No I donít have an NTE5, I have 2 cables coming out of the BT box on the outside of the house one goes upstairs one goes down stairs,
the one upstairs has no phones connected just the sky router and there are 2phones down stairs all the boxís in the house are ext ones not an NTE5 so I was wondering can I put a dedicated faceplate on the one upstairs or do I have to use just a plug in ADSL filter.....

      Re: Further improvements

Your wiring is "unconventional", the master socket is the one which has the electronics to detect the ring signal and pass it on to the slaves. In your case the line is split before entering the house so you probably have 2 masters. Unless you can get BT to fit an NTE5 I think you will have to continue using a filter or if you are after neatness then use one of These

Dont forget, you are not supposed to interfere with BT's wiring so unless you have a master with detachable faceplate you shouldn't be fitting extensions at all.
Also all the phones will still need filters.

unconventional Ö.yeah tell me about it, its like the 2 extensions up and down are both slaves as there is no master up or down, so you think it will be ok to use this then or can I use one of these or will this not work as there is no master ?

      Re: Further improvements

You can't use the faceplate without the NTE5. I think the ADSL Nation - XTF-68/85 - Pre-filtered Telephone Socket will work but you shouldn't be touching the BT wiring and I don't think it will be better than using a good filter. See This for info. If you are trying to inprove your connection I would ask have all the devices on your extensions got filters as not having them will be causing problems.

all extensions have a filter, my connection is at 8mb just tring to raise the SNR which is between 11-12 so i will give th XTF a try

      Re: Further improvements

You already have a good SNR so increasing will not improve anything unless you are preparing to upgrade to MAX

If you definitely have no master socket, i.e one with a surge arrester and ring generating components, then you should be able to get BT to fit one for free as your line is incorrectly terminated - and they will fit you an NTE5 type.

You can then change the faceplate to whatever you want, although your SNR is good anyway.
