      Aluminium Lines

      Hi

I have just gone from Sky Connect to Sky Max and are speed has increased from 512kbps to about 1.2mbps and have found out we have aluminium lines which is the main problem for the slow speed. If we went to Sky Line Rental when its available would they change our line to copper?

      Re: Aluminium Lines

Do you know how far the aluminium cabling goes ? ie back to the pole or all the way to the exchange. I;ve heard of lines from the pole / distribution box ( underground ) to the property being replaced. However if its all the way to the exchange, I've never heard of this being done, i'll stand corrected if others have, and I imagine it would be very expensive.

      Re: Aluminium Lines

The aluminium Lines to the exchange were changed to copper but from the distribution box to the pole is aluminium. So who do I need to talk to for getting it sorted.

I doubt if BT would be in any rush to re-pull the line in copper just to increase your ADSL speed. Their main motto is "if it ain't broke don'e fix it or spend money on it"

      Re: Aluminium Lines

Yes we have alluminium lines in our village as well. It would seem that during the war (2nd) the government and the communications bods of the time used alluminium to save costs.

I do not think Sky would replace your telephone line for you as, as far as I'm aware, BT still owns all the telephone lines. (that makes a bit of a mockery of de-monopolisation as perpertrated by Thatcher and co) so it would have to be BT that you approach and as they "Only guarantee" their lines for speech it would be highly unlikely they would do anything.

If they do let me know and I will get mine changed cos alluminium lines severly restrict my adsl speed as well.

      Re: Aluminium Lines

It is very unlikely that BT will do anything. You could ask them for a quote - they will sometimes split costs down the middle but be prepared for a 4-5 figure quote back
