      Going bald slowly......

      Well,

Im not thick, stupid or dull when it comes to networks, cables etc but this is doing my head in.

I have a main incoming BT line with a test socket. I then have feed off the BT socket an extension thats run using cat5e udp cable and ending in a ADSLNation XTF-68 socket.

      Now the fun begins.

Via the BT test socket the line is quiet as a church mouse, but as soon as I plug in the extension all hell breaks loose and I get a noisy line.

This has been running fine for over 3 months, no noise and my speeds via Sky max have been 15323 (max) but for the last week I've had this noise and as soon as I plug in the extension or turn on the router (Speedtouch 585) I get a noisy line.

      Any ideas?

The only thing I can see that could be causing this is the cat5e which is un-screened, perhapse a screened cable would be better but if thats the case why all of a sudden been a problem for the last week.

      Doing my head in slowly.

      Regards.

      Hello Realist, hope you're well.

I doubt you could find a telephone extension using cat5 or otherwise which was shielded. The twist should be all you need.

Have you still got your old face plate for the extension? It might be worth popping that back in and using a micro filter to see if the problem remains. Your filter could have gone south.

      Re: Going bald slowly......

Thats why Im using the ADSLNation socket because I did have a BT extension and a filter in place.

I have loads of spare filters and I tried them all and changed the pair of cable over just in case and Im still getting noise.

      AHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry just to clarify... your router is plugged into the main socket via a microfilter or via the ADSLnation XTF-68 at the end of the extension?

I think it's the second option...

As you have tried a different pair on the extension, I can only see it being a problem with the XTF-68. The only way to check that, is to find another face plate, and see if the noise still exists with a microfilter. So it might be a trips to the shops for a new plate I'm afraid.

      Re: Going bald slowly......

Same problem with a filter, plug in filter or a normal face place.

Anyway, just plugged in my Sky router and Im now synched at:

      DownStream Connection Speed 15323 kbps
      UpStream Connection Speed 764 kbps

      Back to normal, strange!

Still got noise on the line mind you.

Might throw a loose cable over the floor from the master to a spare socket and give that a go.

      Troubles..

      Regards.

You have only wired to pins 2 and 5 for your extension?
....and for any other extensions you may have, and have filters on all phones and your Sky box.

      Re: Going bald slowly......

Well, Im still having problems and so far I've done the following.....

Removed the extension cable and re-routed it just in case.
Using the extension cable outlets on the master socket.
      Filtered all sockets.
Purchased a ADSL Nations filtered socket for the router.

And Im still getting noise on the line.

When the phone is used thats plugged into the master (filtered and changed loads of times) the adsl gets cut off and you can hear adsl tones down the line.

The cable Im using for the extension is Cat5e UDP (not screened) but its only a short run so I cant see that being the problem.

If I plug a phone into the test socket in the master the incoming line is clear so that rules out a BT problem, so the only thing I cant work out is why are the filters not working?

      Regards.
