      Does one have 2 cables entering into it? If one is an extension from the other then one will be where the line ends, the other will have the main input line plus an extension running to the 2nd socket.

      Other clues can be the logo, usually in the top left corner of the non removable bit, which should be a T for Telecom, BT, Openreach or it could even be ntl:/Virgin. Extensions don't usually have the logo.

      Also, check they are both connected to the same line! Check for a dialling tone with a standard telephone and dial 17070 to get the number on a BT line.

      If you can see where the line comes into the house you should be able to follow it to the first socket which is usually the master. HTH, Ian

      BT finally arrived today and fitted master socket (doesnt look like a bill either!)

      speed seems to have jumped but connection still not stable stats below
