^^^ That's my understanding too. ^^^ The input connections on a master socket are labelled A and B, they're not numbered.

As for the charge for getting BT to do this, they will "regularise" an illicit or old socket if requested when you take the line over (say if you've just moved into the house) for a small fee (I think it's about 25/30), but they do usually charge a lot more if you ask them to do it at a later date.

The thing to do is just change it yourself, they will have no record of what is actually fitted nor any proof that it was you that fitted it.

      Re: can i replace this

      ordered one of these
Find Latest BT Openreach Master Socket NTE 5A Brand new on eBay within, Leads Cables, Home Phones, Mobile Home Phones (end time 26-Oct-07 14:09:44 BST)

for now it will take out a 20ft loop of wire and all the extensions in the house
which are not needed in fact they are all disconnected but the place will be neater.

i will look into the filterd face plate when i sort it out.

Yes, B & Q, Wickes, Focus - any of them open tomorrow! It is a standard box the same size as a single power point or lightswitch.

That's what I meant by polarity apparently isn't important. I would still leave them connected the BT way! Orange to B and white to A.
