I didn't believe the difference that this could make until I tried it! I had a disused upstairs extension installed around 30 years ago with the orange ring wire connected back to the master.
Disconnecting this one orange/white wire immediately increased my sync speed from 8444 to 10263 where it has remained now for over 8 hours and my internet connection has been really stable for the first time ever! Now touching wood frantically!

I had a problem when I got Sky BB. Was getting 1.4 mbs. My extension wiring was a mess and old so got a new extension put in. My speed went straight up to 8mbs. I cant use one of those face plates as my BT box is a old style one. A new extension might be easier if your other extension is of poor quality.

That doesn't stop you installing one, either by replacing the old master with an NTE one (against the rules, but what the heck) or by connecting one alongside the old master as shown here Guide to rewiring internal UK phone wiring
