Master Socket
Hi All,
I have ordered sky max package which is hopefully getting activated thursday. I was just about the order a xte-2005 from adsl nation and thought i better check where my BT Master socket was. I have just checked and I dont appear to have one. The BT main wires come into a cupboard and at the end of them is a red junction type box with GPO written on it. From there is a thin white wire going to a normal phone socket box. The red GPO box and the white wires look ancient.
Just wondering if you think this will effect my broadband and should i see if BT will fit a NTE5 in its place?. I have been on cable broadband up until now so never used the phone line other than for phone.
thanks for your help
John

Re: Master Socket
It would be worth finding out if BT will charge you for this service. If your existing phones are operating normally, BT have fulfilled their obligation to the customer. The NTE5 master socket is normally installed free as part of a faulty line servicing. A customer requesting a different socket for Internet connection will usually be charged the full rate, typically over £100 per visit.
If they want paying, then I'd go ahead and fit a 'BT' box myself. These are available on eBay. You'll then need the XTE-2005 faceplate to do the job properly. Plenty of info on wiring up is given here:

Re: Master Socket
Hi again,
sorry forgot to say when you speak to bt they will say about a charge if the engineer finds you have "mucked about" with the wiring, when i phoned was told about this charge, i had just moved in so had not played with wiring, then i got them to confirm if no master socket in the house they would come and fit one or free (as some other people on this forum i had the line into my house which came into a junction box inside my door)
