Advise on error ratings and speed

      Hello all,

Would just like a bit of advice , been with Sky BB on Max for 3 weeks, at first download was 8096kbps and upstream 768 kbps, as shown on router stats,I was quite happy with this as previously with Toucan on a 2Mb package, then last week all very slow and saw that for some unknown reason both speeds capped to 128kbps, Tier 1 agreed that this must have been in error and reported to Tier 3 to fix , Now finally back up to 8096 downstream and 768 upstream , am about 1.45 km from exchange and Bt check on their website shows can get 5 - 8 mb speed so am quite happy with this , looks like I am on G.DMT capped , if my line can only get this speed though, assume capped at this to make it stable. Have received no disconnections since speed changed to 8096 on Saturday.

Can you look ay my full stats below and see if all seem OK, will Sky now leave me at this speed as all quite stable and no disconnections , there do seem to be quite a few errors.is this normal, using with ethernet cable and using extension but it is a hardwired extenson done by BT, please advise

Re: Advise on error ratings and speed

You are on (Sky) G.DMT. Were you on ADSL2+ your attenuation of 29db would allow, assuming a relatively noise free line, a connection speed of ~16000kbps.

Would it be stable at this speed? Probably not.

Even capped your line is generating a lot of errors (even though you have a healthy noise margin). Not only is it generating a lot of CRC but your errored and severely errored seconds are also high - you've possibly not noticed that your connection is a bit "choppy" from time to time. Your total uncorrected errors are high for an interleave connection.

Your problems may well be down to transient or "bursty" noise. If you are happy with your current connection then that's fine. Personally I'd want to see what I could do to reduce the errors and then take a decision over whether a move to ADSL2+ would be a good idea.

If you want to start this process then you need to connect your router to the test socket which you'll find behind the faceplate of your master socket (assuming you have an NTE5). Power cycle the router then leave it connected and downloading and/or surfing for an hour or so. Then extract your extended stats again.

      saturday, thanks for that

Could to advise what sort of figs these errors should be at to be acceptable and where I can find them in the stats, thanks

Couldn't get screws off for test socket, will do this test when husband comes come but have done from the master socket as it is, here are the figures, are they any better, will this mean test socket will be better still, if test socket better what do you advise . many thanks

Re: Advise on error ratings and speed

They are a lot better but still too high to be honest.

It's likely that the test socket will deliver an even lower set of errors as it effectively eliminates all influence from your internal phone wiring. If it does then you will benefit from fitting a replacement filtered faceplate (easy DIY, 5 min, ~15).

You may find your extension when wired into the unfiltered terminals of a filtered faceplate gives an acceptable result though it is still likely to degrade your connection to some extent. The only way to find out how much is to try it and see.

If it isn't acceptable then the best course of action would be to put the router by the filtered master socket and run an ethernet cable to your PC. Next best would be to buy a long RJ11 (router to phone socket cable) and plug this into the master socket. Otherwise it means running a new dedicated extension and socket.

With regard to interpreting the stats, there is no right number other than none. In reality, a small number of errors is either inescapable or can be ignored as they lead to no significant effect on the connection. All I can offer is my opinion as to what level you should be concerned about.

If you are interested the errors to look for are:
      • ES - errored seconds
      • SES - severely errored seconds
      • UAS - unavailable seconds
      • CRC - cyclic redundancy check
      • LOS - loss of signal
      • LOF - loss of framing

There are others to consider but it all gets a bit complicated

Re: Advise on error ratings and speed

I'd like to iterate what Saturday says: do give the test socket a go. My experience of high CRC errors (admitedly on other routers) is that they regularly go hand in hand with a hardware problem on the WAN interface of the router (the bit that plugs into the BT line as opposed to the bit that your PC plugs into). If your CRC errors don't go away when you try the test socket, I'd get in touch with Sky support. If they do, I'd be thinking of the internal wiring.

(Saturday: I shall say no more on internal wiring. )

Re: Advise on error ratings and speed

Did a test with router plugged in to the test socket and just got 3 errors in about an hour and a half.

Am now plugged back in to the master socket but husband has disconnected the cable in the socket that he hard wired in for some extensions , lastest test is shown below, so it looks like the fault may well be with husbands wiring, so going to have a look at this

      @Simonejones

      Looking a lot better now

Fit a filtered faceplate and see what you can do to improve the extensions and I'd say you could safely call Sky and ask them to put you on ADSL2+ to pretty much double your speed
