Re: Advise on error ratings and speed

      Saturday,

Thanks for that advice, phoned again and finally got a lovely lady who know what she was talking about, she actually said that at Tier 1 they have no access to see what mode router is on ie ADSL2+ or GDMT or if the speed has been capped, they can only see what has been written on the notes and sometimes these are not always correct.

She asked for my noise margins and att and then said that with these figs I should be able to get more speed and go to ADSL2+ , she said she would have to raise a ticket to Tier 3 as it is only them who can this and she said to allow a week as they are very busy. She gave me the ticket no to call back with if not heard or seen any changes done by next week. So hopefully will be sorted soon.

      That's great

Sky, thankfully, have some really good people - maybe the majority - but then there are the ones that, well, let's just say they're not so good.

Hope it all works out OK for you.

Am I the only one who's eye popped out of my head when reading this? I was under the (clearly mistaken) impression that T1 could see what the connection was actually running, not what it should be running. If so, there's a big lesson here: when a T1 support person says "you're on ADSL2+" what they actually mean is "I have in front of me a bit of paper that says you should be on ADSL2+ but actually I've got no way of telling and quite often the bit of paper is wrong!" Astonishing!

Re: Advise on error ratings and speed

Have now finally got Sky to put me on to ADSL2+ and remove cap altogether.

      Mode: ADSL2+
      Channel: Fast
      Trellis: ON
      Line Status: No Defect
      Training Status: Showtime

      Down Up
      SNR (dB): 7.6 12.5
      Attn(dB): 32.0 17.0
      Pwr(dBm): 1.3 12.4
      Max(Kbps): 15624 884
      Rate (Kbps): 15323 766

However detailed stats show a lot of errors being created, is this acceptable ? what sort of error rate do you recommend on ADSL2+ ? Router doesn't seem to have lost connection despite all errors, can I do anything to reduce errors, as per previous posts have new faceplate, changed from faulty port on computer, changed extension wiring. any help appreciated.

Also Tier 3 recommended rebooting router every 3/5 days for optimum results.

Re: Advise on error ratings and speed

If you post your stats I can offer an opinion on your error levels if that will help.

It sounds like you've done pretty much all you can physically to remove noise (unless you still have that extension?). If your error levels are too high then what you now need to do is raise your noise margin to the point that they become acceptable. As an example, left to its own devices my router will connect at ~13750kbps and at this speed it generates more errors than I'm happy with. If I raise the noise margin and knock the speed down to 12000kbps then the errors drop to practically zero (you'll almost always get some errors on ADSL2+). My download speed at 12000 is almost identical to that at 13750 (due to the effect of the errors) so that's the right speed for my connection.

Interesting about T3 recommending a reboot every 3-5 days. When I was experimenting with my connection speed I sometimes felt that my connection would deteriorate after a couple of days if the error levels were a bit high. I've heard Sky people talk about errors building up and have often wondered what the mechanism might be for this. Still wondering

Re: Advise on error ratings and speed

Here are the full stats, I feel a lot of errors for nearly 10 mins, should I higher the noise margin, what level would you advise, also assume if reboot the router than this would need to be done each time ? The highest noise margin has been on ADSL2 is about 7.9, thanks for your help

Re: Advise on error ratings and speed

Yes, too many errors currently I'd say.

Use Mognut's excellent utility to set your noise margin. You'll have to experiment to find the best speed/error compromise but I'd think of trying about 12500kbps to start with. Run it for a while and see what the error levels are and what your download speed is, then finesse for the best results.

Yes, any changes you make will have to be redone every time you reboot the router.

Re: Advise on error ratings and speed

Is that with the extension? If so it's looking a lot better. What did you do?

Your error levels are quite reasonable now but bear in mind you're capped on G.DMT. I suspect if you were uncapped and on ADSL2+ you'd see a connection speed of ~11500kbps but your error level might be a bit too high for a stable connection. You could manage this yourself though by pushing up the noise margin which would drop your speed a bit (say to 10000kbps) but reduce the errors.

How do you view your errors on the line? How do you access this information?
