Re: Advise on error ratings and speed

I'd say your errors are just about acceptable but probably only at the speed you are connecting at now. Were Sky to lift the cap I think it is very likely you'd experience problems.

Hopefully the new filtering will improve things further but extensions will always add to noise problems (a router extension has to be unfiltered from the master socket - putting a filter on the end of it will probably not help much).

Power sockets are never where you want them are they Is there maybe one several feet away that you could run a longer router cable (RJ11) to? Then you could plug your router directly into the new filtered master socket faceplate and run an ethernet cable to your PC.

If that's just too messy or too much trouble then my feeling would be I've got 8meg, its a stable connection, do I really need more speed?

The extension errors are horrible, the XTE-2005 are OK and the test socket are fine. You've got to find a way to drop that extension. Even with the XTE-2005 I'm not sure running uncapped would be a good idea. No harm in trying though I suppose - you could always go back to capped.

Re: Advise on error ratings and speed

      Saturday,

Have a look at these sats, still running on hardwired extension but have unplugged orange/white cable from master socket the one on no 3 that is for the ring , and also have changed port ethenet wire plugged into on computer as this port seemed faulty ie when shut computer down still stayed lit up on router, will still use new faceplate when arrives but all looks OK on the extension as it is, do you think I should ask Sky to remove or higher the cap of 8096 ? Is the max speed I would get the speed that shows as Max (kbps) which is 11104 for downstream , should I ask Sky to cap it to this speed for stabilty, please advise, do I tell this to Tier 1 when I phone ans they pass on to Tier 3 to do, thanks for your help

Re: Advise on error ratings and speed

Well that's made a big difference hasn't it

Your error levels are really quite reasonable now and on an extension too - of course the test would be to see how much they increase with ADSL2+ and a higher speed.

Personally I'd give a go now (do fit the new faceplate though). You'll have to go through Tier 1 to get to Tier 3 so it will be a pain but with your stats I think you may well be able to get a stable 15/16 meg or so. If it turns out to be a bit flakey you can always manage the noise margin yourself to knock this down a bit and improve the connection.

The max figure you can see is what your router would connect at were it not capped on (Sky) G.DMT, not what it would connect at on ADSL2+. As a point of interest it now appears that Sky use an unusual G.DMT implementation (ADSL1) to cap customers which offers a far higher speed than "standard" ADSL1. I'm still reading up on it but it's nice to have a mystery solved.

Re: Advise on error ratings and speed

      Saturday,

Just thought I would let you know the latest, new faceplate came today, have fitted and so far after 46 mins no CRS, no LOS and no ES /SES errors and 14 corrected errors and no uncorrected , so looking good, although SNR still shows as 15.5 downstream but this is really good for SNR anyway, especially with an extension.

Phoned Sky and asked about ADSL 2+ told that Sky do not operate on ADSL2+ and that lifting our cap of 8096 would not mean we would get any greater speed, bloke didn't really know what he was on about , in the end I hang up and redialled later, got someone else , she checked and said we were already on ADSL2+ but the reason it showed GDMT was this was an automatic default on the router and that everybody's showed this, I asked about the capping and she said there was no notes to suggest that our line had been capped and this was the max speed we would receive, anyway looking at our full router stats me and my husband feel that we have been capped and so I have emailed the technical department using the email address - broadbandtechnicalsupport@BSkyB.com , so will see if I get any reply !!

Re: Advise on error ratings and speed

It's painful isn't it? Both Teir 1 responses that you have received are just noise. Sky do operate ADSL2+ and no, not everyone shows g.dmt on their routers. I'm afraid that you seem to have got through to muppets on both occasions and I can only suggest you keep calling until you get someone that knows what a router is.

      Thanks for that Mosseywell,

Do you think my email will get it sorted out now automatically (I think the emails go to Tier 3) or should I still keep ringing, luckily I have the freephone number

Re: Advise on error ratings and speed

Have phoned and spoken to Sky again, this time the person seemed to know what he was on about. He said that my notes said max speed uncapped could obtain was @8096 (8megs) for download, I said I was only 1.4 kms from exchange and Noise margin was 14-16 dbs , he then did a speed test and said max I would get was the 8096 8 meg connection, when I queried this he said that it depended on many factors including state/age of wiring, whether any new houses had been linked into line, etc. I also asked him to check if I was on ADSL2+ for the Max package and he checked and confirmed that I was, he said that all Max package were put on to the ADSL2+ automatically.

I then asked him to confirm once more that we were uncapped and on ADSL2+ and he said yes the notes said 8meg connetcion uncapped was max could obtain.

I still await a reply to my email to see if this confirms the above, will update in due course, do you think the above seems plausible or have I been fobbed off again?

Re: Advise on error ratings and speed

He may have seemed to know what he was talking about. He may even think he knows what he was talking about but sadly, I don't think he did.

Yes, to the best of my knowledge all Max customers are put on ADSL2+ unless there are identified line issues in which case they are capped and put on G.DMT. There may be additional reasons why customers are put on G.DMT but that's a different discussion.

This is fact: You are on G.DMT and your speed is capped at 8096kbps.

Your router stats clearly show this. They also show your error levels are quite low now and that your line is capable of connecting with ADSL2+ at a speed of ~16500kbps which is actually faster than Max goes. That is of course just theory and in the real world you may not get this but one thing is certain your line is not only capable of 8096kbps.

I'm sorry you are being given the run around on this but I think maybe you are just too reasonable and trusting when you speak to Sky
