      Encapsulation is PPPoA
      VPI/VCI is 0/38
      Multiplexing is VC

There is no known way of getting a (your) user name and password without a Sky router.

do I take it then the username is generated at random and placed in the boxes as pot luck or support would know it?

No. The user name is the Mac address of the router plus @skydsl. No one knows for sure but the presumption is that the password is then generated from this (or not).

It would be a logistical nightmare to distribute hundreds of thousands of routers each programmed in advance with user names and passwords specific to an individual customer. No doubt the Sky systems run some sort of hash check when the router first connects and then (possibly) ties this to the account.

Of course the obvious question is why have Sky taken this route rather than the more obvious one of issuing user names and passwords to customers to be entered into the router. Presumably they want to make it as hard as possible to prevent customers from using alternative routers. If that's true then we may see at some future date that people using non Sky routers suddenly lose their connection.

So I the router is dead on arrival no BB
If the delivery is missed or late no BB
If they have a stock shortage no BB

I cannot believe they cannot issue the details over the phone even sky must have thought of the above - then again they probably don't care much.
