switching sr101 to tp link wdr4300

      Hi all

I am in the process of swapping out my sky router. I have got my username and password and mac address and I am following the guide by 14Apache. I have a query on one aspect which is me just being thick... But could someone clarify

      Disconnect you sky router

2.2) Connect the router to LAN port 1 and the mains (do not connect WAN port yet)

2.3) Navigate to the tp-link web interface (192.168.1.1)

Disconnect sky router altogether or just from pc?
Connect router to where. Just to pc via lan 1 or to modem

If I have to connect to modem how do I get onto internet to open dd wrt?

      Could someone clarify?

      Thanks

No worries, we all make mistakes.

What issues with speed are you currently experiencing?

Re: switching sr101 to tp link wdr4300

The speed of the new router is less than the sky router and the connection keeps dropping... thinking of putting sky router back.. I have fibre 40mb but am getting an average of 5 to 8mb on 2.4 wireless and about 19mb on 5ghz when sat in same room but drops dramatically when I move further away..

Re: switching sr101 to tp link wdr4300

WiFi always produces a poor result. As a result we tend to advise against using WiFi for any speed testing.

I'm not 100% sure, but the Galaxy Note 2 may only connect at a maximum of 65mbps anyway. Certainly my Samsung Galaxy SII has this limitation and I can never get the full speed on my own connection.

To illustrate this point here is a test carried out just now on my own mobile phone:

Can you please retest using a wired connection. If you can use the speedtest.net site and choose either London - Structured Communications or London - Namesco. Both these sites have the capacity for testing Fibre broadband.

As for the connection keep dropping, is this confirmed when you look at the router's connection stats? Does it show a good uptime or is this short?

There are a few possible reasons for the connection dropping. It would be beneficial to rule out some of them. The first being what the router's stats say.
