      Cannot connect to Internet during line test

      I am a brand new sky broadband unlimited customer. Last Friday 7th Jan my phoneline was setup and I connected my router. I was able to connect to the Internet on all my computers with a strong connection and did some VoIP calling etc.

      On Sunday 9th Jan my connection to the Internet cut out. The orange light on my router is intermittently flashing and I put this down to the line testing which I believe will take ten days.

      Is it normal for me to not to be able to connect to the Internet at all during this period? I don't want to turn off or reset router if the DLM testing is happening.

      Any help on this would be appreciated.

      Orange flashing light mean you have lost sync with the exchange.

      Turn off the router and check all the phone connections are in place correctly.

      Does your phone work and have you fitted an ADSL filter as the very FIRST thing plugged into the phone socket, if you have you will need to ring and report a line fault.

      Actually just looking and my orange light is just on solid and not flashing. My sky+ box is plugged in to a splitter in the phone socket I have plugged a filter in the other socket which has phone/broadband. Phone works fine.

      You don't have PPP, then.

      How many telephone sockets do you use?
      Is the router connected to the master or an extension socket?
      Is the router running off an extension cable, or the short grey dsl cable that Sky provided?
      The sky tv splitter - is that fitted directly into the socket, without a filter before it?

      Every phone socket in the house that is in use MUST have an ADSL filter connected to it as the very first thing plugged into it.

      The best way to test you phone line is to connect directly to the TEST socket with just the ADSL filter and router connected, if that works then at least you know the fault lies with your setup.

      Ok i reset my router and the connection works but very slow 0.78 Mbps download speed. Sky quoted me 5mb max. Has been working fine for 2 days now.

      I haven't got the Adsl filter as the first thing in the socket and I'm using an extension socket not the master. Is this significantly compromising the quality/speed of my connection?

      Yes its very likely it is. My advice to you is to disconnect everything from the phone line including the sky splitter, extensions etc and just have a micro filter into your master/test socket with just the router and telephone. After doing this call sky and ask them to re-start DLM and let the line stabalise for 10 days with just a bsic set up. This will get you your optimum speeds. Before doing that could you post your stats as they are now with your current set up?

      You MUST have an ADSL filter connected to EVERY socket in the property that is being used by any phone/fax etc, etc and it MUST be the first thing connected to the socket, everything else then connects to it.
