      Problems accessing certain websites ???

Hi, I recently wiped a friends desktop pc. OS put back on successfully, and pc running great. The pc is connected directly to the back of the sky router. LAN says connected. Pc is running XP Home Edition SP1. I tried running windows update to update OS but get page cannot be displayed. Cannot get to microsoft.com at all. Most other sites I can get to. (BBC, Google, Hotmail) I cannot get to AVG to put on Virus Protection, again getting page cannot be displayed. Any help on this would be much appreciated. Do I have to configure Internet Settings eg exceptions.

That is the symptoms a a trojan/virus infection. Download and run Malwarebytes and remove everything it recommends.
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

You may have to do this on another PC and transfer the program with a USB drive. It is better to rename the exe to explorer.exe to help fool the malware.

It is unusual to get this on a fresh install but with the amount of malware on the net these days I am not surprised. When you do a new installation the first thing you should do is install the AV application. It is better downloading one to a USB stick and transfer it to the PC from there. Get it installed then connect to the net to update it. This way you are protected immediately.

Thanks for that. Due to it being a fresh install, I didn't think it would be an infection. I did think of putting stuff on usb drive and installing AVG / Malware bytes from there. If there is nothing i'm missing from the settings on the router then I will try updating via the usb.

      Thanks for the advice.
