Adding a second router & accessing a external hard drive

      Hi Guys

I have a external hard drive connected via a torrent hub but transfer speeds are terrible & the hub is forcing the hard drive to power down so watching movies is a bit tricky with it pausing all the time

So Ive managed to get my hands on a d-link dir-635 router which has a USB port
& have connected them via LAN

I can access both router settings page & I think Ive configured them correctly
but for the life of me cant understand how or where to access the hard drive
Should it show up under my networks or my computer

Sorry for such a silly question but Im new at this stuff & impressed myself by getting to 2 routers too work

      1st router is on 192.168.0.1
      2nd router is on 192.168.0.2

      Im confused

Does the USB port work? According to this review it is not of much use, it is an old review and it may have been improved with firmware updates, D-Link DIR-635 RangeBooster N 650 Broadband Wireless Router Review - Networking Reviews - TrustedReviews

Re: Adding a second router & accessing a external hard drive

I'd say yes because once the HD is removed & then plugged in again you can hear it boot up & it does the same if I connect it to my pc directly

So should the HD show up in my computer or my network?

The USB port may be only supplying power to the external drive (or has it it's own power supply?)

Re: Adding a second router & accessing a external hard drive

If you are plugging it into a router, it should show on the network. Just because it powers does not mean it is connecting. If it was, you would see it in the attached devices list of the router it is plugged into. When you plug it in by ethernet does it show?

Just because a USB port is powered does not mean it is working, An example of this is the Sky box which has a USB port but he only thing it can be used for is charging Mp3 devices. It will not play them. You would really need to study the router manual.

So far Ive checked the router attached devices & its on there
Ive checked my network places & its not in there
& the USB can be used for either a printer or a hard drive

Have a look at this article you might find it of use. Ignore the 'experts' comments on the bottom, it is too basic for their highly tuned brains.
