      DrayTek Vigor 2800G help!

      Hi all,

im missing having the VPN ability i had before switching to sky and their stock router (DG934G)..so having a read about i proceeded to switch across to the ol' vigor...

its all conected up and working..sync speeds seem comparable to the sky router..however download speed (speedtest.net) are down by around 3mb..

here is where things are set...

      VPI 0
      VCI 38
      Encapsulating Type VC MUX
      Protocol PPPoA
      Modulation ADSL2+ Auto(G.992.5)
      PPP Authentication PAP or CHAP

i tried tellnetting in and tinkering with the SNR (Coding Gain) however whilst it made the conection speed move about a bit..it didnt seem to have a geat deal of effect on 'real' speeds

are there any futher settings (or improvements on my settings above) that you would recomend?

Here is a Speettest grab of the Vigor2800G

      and the sky DG934G

as you can see..im well down on speed...so as a result back on to the sky router

      Any ideas?

Have you told Sky you need to be able to VPN?

Only the Sagem needs a firmware upgrade to overcome VPN problems. There never have been any issues with either of the Netgears.

      Re: DrayTek Vigor 2800G help!

for the moment ive not even looked at VPN....i only mentioned it as the Vigor has inbuilt VPN termination (great for me as i can VPN in, access files from my NAS and tinker with the CCTV, all without having an actual PC on at home)

my problem is the the download speed im getting thru the Vigor is way down on the speed im achiving on the stock sky router.

any ideas why it is so much slower?

Not really, could be the router is faulty, but does it matter when the Sky router is working OK. Could be the Vigor needs a firmware update?

      Re: DrayTek Vigor 2800G help!

Vigor was working great a couple of months ago before switching to sky...whilst it could be possable its hardware...id be supprised if it was

runing the latest firmware in the 2800G (checked that ) altho the latest version is dated 2008 so i think its fair to assume they have ironed all the bugs out

the sky router doesnt offer VPN terminaion, i could run a server at home to simply tunnel thru...or run 2 routers (sky for ADSL, Vigor for DHCP and VPN etc) however its another mains adaptor, another box to try and hide and if nothing else..seems a 'backwards' way of solving the problem as the Vigor 'should' be able to handle it all as it did with my previous ISP

      Re: DrayTek Vigor 2800G help!

I should have mentioned it before but I do not trust speedtest.net to be accurate, I have seen some shockingly bad results on here. Try a speed test at http://www.skyuser.co.uk/speedtester/ and see if you get the same difference.

The only other thing I can think of is that the Vigor is not picking up the ADSL2+, is there any way you can check this apart from the setting saying it is on ADSL2+. Also, if possible I would select ADSL2+ only in the Modulation instead of Auto.

      Re: DrayTek Vigor 2800G help!

      righty...a little more figured out..

with the 'best' settings i can get the Vigor to work well on..and connnected via CAT5 im getting download speeds of over10meg!

downside is when im connecting wirelessly im down compared to the netgear by about a meg....which is strange as the Netgar router is around 5meters further way and on the 1st floor of the house.. (long ADSL cable feeding the netgear - the vigor is on a short one locally to master socket)

i guess the fair test would be see what i get via netgear on the wired connection...as i suspect its gonna be similar to the vigor's wired conneciton..

in conclusion, it looks like the Vigor is stuggling wirelessly, maybe somthing to do with its close proximity to this PC...i dont know....

next step, put the routers together and do some more tests...

      cheers for the sugestions!

Are both routers on the same channel wirelessly?
