      weak wireless signal

Hi, I have a netgear router attached to my PC on the ground floor, but I am unable to receive wireless signals for laptop, ps3 etc anywhere else in the house other than in the room with the router or directly outside the windows of the room.
Can anybody please suggest what can be done to boost/extend the signal upstairs and around the ground floor of my house. I need it to reach 2 maybe 3 other rooms if possible i.e. 2 upstairs bedrooms and 1 other ground floor room. I am also not very technical (if you hadn't already guessed) so plain talking responses would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Buy a set of homeplugs, these can be used in any mains socket and will allow a wired type connection without the wire. You can also buy them that have wireless access points built in to allow you to extend the wireless range in dead areas.

      Re: weak wireless signal

before you do this I would suggest doing a scan for other wireless devices that may be interfering with yours...

download and install Xirrus wifi inspector

Xirrus: Switching Without Wires - Advanced IT Wi-Fi Networking Tools

this will tell you what other wireless routers etc may be nearby and also what channel they are broadcasting on...try and go to a channel that they are not using...the best ones are usually 1, 6 and 11 I think...

login to your router....to do this open your browser, the address should be http://192.168.0.1

      default username: admin
      default password: sky

check your wireless settings and see what channel its on and change and save to a different frequency....

      hope this helps...

      Re: weak wireless signal

1, 6 and 11 are some of the heaviest used channels, they are the 3 main defaults in use by many ISPs. Definitely scan for what is out there and then look to use a channel not listed in use by others.

      Re: weak wireless signal

Channel 13 is one of the ones often overlooked by many so try that first.
