Sky Email and Thunderbird 3 - Help Please!!

      Hello

I have recently downloaded Thunderbird 3 - I have used the older versions before with no real issues.

It now has auto wiz to set up emails using IMAP - did this for Sky - problems encountered:

      - Not all sky emails downloaded and now not receiving any emails
      - When sending out emails it says xxx@googlemail.com??? - not set up googlemail yet on it so why is it doing that?
      - duplicate copies one for sky and one for gmail

does anyone have any ideas - tried various changes on the set but nothing seems to be working, tried contacting sky - some not heard of Thunderbird, then got passed round the world, finally spoke to someone who told me all the stuff I already knew/done - I'm not wiz but blimey how hard is it to sort this out!

there are others but sending and receiving are my first goals

      hope you guys can help

      thanks

Re: Sky Email and Thunderbird 3 - Help Please!!

First, have you gone into skymail using IE or Firefox and ensured that the settings are set to use IMAP.

If NOT then do that first, goto your email account and Mail Settings | Forwarding and POP/IMAP, the only 2 radio buttons highlighted should be "disable forwarding" and "Enable IMAP".

Then in TB3 the following is the main bits you need to have set:
      In Tools | Account Settings:
first page just fill in all the relevant bits making sure that the email address is shown as xxx@sky.com (where xxx is your email address)
      Server Settings Page: IMAP
      Server Name: imap.tools.sky.com Port 993
      User Name: xxx@sky.com
      Connection Security SSL/TLS
Use Secure Authentication - NOT TICKED

Then go to Outgoing Server (SMTP ) underneath the Account Name:
There should be a line that gives your email address followed by - mail.sky.com
highlight that and make sure the following fields are correct:
      Server: mail.sky.com
      Port: 587
      User Name: xxx@sky.com
      Secure Authentication: No
      Connection Security: STARTTLS

Providing that is all correct then it should work.

PS: This may be the same stuff that you already know, but it is what works for me :-)

I too have problems with this - have applied every setting as shown, but simply receive the message "Web Login required. (Failure)" when attempting to connect to the account. Password etc all correct, and can log in to Web mail no problem. IMAP is enabled in my Sky account.

Any ideas what causes the error message will be very gratefully received!

(Just for info, using Thunderbird 3.0, running on Ubuntu 9.10, but have tried stting up the same account on a Vista Home Premium system with exactly the same results, so I assume it's not an OS issue)

      Many thanks,

Re: Sky Email and Thunderbird 3 - Help Please!!

First go to the Gmail Account using Web I/F and goto Settings, on the first page look for Browser Connection and click the radio button for 'Always use https'
Scroll to bottom and save changes.
In TB ensure in Account Settings|Server Settings 'Check for new messages every xx minutes' is greater than 10

      If that doesn't work then:

If you’re very sure that you’re using a correct password and username (with @gmail.com after the user name), and not checking email in Gmail’s Inbox too frequently, you may need to clear and unlock the CAPTCHA. To unlock CAPTCHA for Gmail account, go to the following URL:

      https://www.google.com/accounts/DisplayUnlockCaptcha

Note: For Google Apps user, visit https://www.google.com/a/yourdomain.com/UnlockCaptcha instead, with yourdomain.com as the valid domain name.

Type in the email address, password for the Gmail address, and fill in the correct Captcha validation. Click on “Unlock” button to fix the IMAP failure error.

PS I got this from Googling "web login required"

Re: Sky Email and Thunderbird 3 - Help Please!!

Don't know if anyone can help, but I've just upgraded my laptop to windows 7 and don't have access to outlook express anymore.

I've installed Thunderbird 3 but am unable to register my Sky account. Has anyone got any advice please? I've tried to add an account and put my name and password etc but it constantly comes back that the username and password is wrong. I know that they are right but I don't understand why???

If anyone could help that would be great - thanks

Re: Sky Email and Thunderbird 3 - Help Please!!

Hi, I have exactly the same problem. I've tried both POP and IMAP. The TB wizard finds my a/c at sky.com on either, and I've also tried configuring both manually, but whatever I do I get the message that username / password is wrong. Sky Tech support just say 'Sorry, we don't have any training on Thunderbird, suggest you try online forums.' Bah. If you hear how to make it work, please let me know!

Re: Sky Email and Thunderbird 3 - Help Please!!

Thanks Steve 61 - Those are the settings that the TB wizard gives but I get 'username / password mismatch' if I use the wiz and 'invalid credentials' if I put the same settings in manually.
For the smtp I've tried both what the wiz gives (mail.sky.com) and what the sky instructions give (smtp.tools.sky.com) but neither works.
A rat-like smell comes from the <sky.com/UnlockCaptcha> workround which seems to have worked for some people - it also gives me 'username and password do not match' altho they absolutely do. So I think it's a problem at the Sky end.

Re: Sky Email and Thunderbird 3 - Help Please!!

Further to above - I spoke to Sky tech help and got someone who knew what he was doing! Sorted! The problem was that the Sky account hadn't synched with Google (apparently) which is something he had to do his end. That made the unlockCaptcha work and that in turn made TB work with the settings as above. The bloke at Sky was very interested to hear that the smtp setting was mail.sky.com and also the port it uses - he didn't think they'd work but they do, and he wrote them down so he can tell other callers. Success!
