Re: trace route
Each hop is a system or router between you and where you are tracing to. The response times you get back is the latency betwen sending/recieving packets between you and the device. You will also see either a IP address or a hostname. if theres no name then it usually means there is none available via DNS.
Some devices are set to not respond to ICMP (pings) so you will just get a time out message. Others may respond to the first ping but then * out after, this isnt always an idication of a problem sometimes the system just discards the packet for watever reason.
Edit: Just to a the 1st hop is the internal IP of your home router/modem, hops 2, 3 (maybe more) after will usually be DNS servers/routers etc on the 02 network in your case.

Re: trace route
first packet was also lost on that step as well so I am wondering if that is a mis-reported IP address.
Although I would say there is something freaky happening between the router and the internet with a load of packets lost.
Try it again and see if it plays ball.I'm a PC, and Windows 7 Backup saved my sanity when BitDefender imploded !!!

Re: trace route
That is why I wonder if 10.1.2.157 is some sort of re-routing instruction.
