Internet Dies Every Time I Turn on Desktop PC

I have a laptop computer which I use to connect to the internet. Recently I bought a desktop because I have problems doing certain things on this computer.

Anyway, whenever I switch on the desktop PC, the internet starts losing syncronisation every few seconds. The noise margin goes from about 6-9 like it usually is to 1, 0, or an insanely high number which I gather is a bug that happens when it tries to show the noise margin as -1.

The desktop PC is not connected to the network in any way, however the second I switch it on this happens. The second I switch it off, the internet is fine again.

The phone line I have my router connected to is on the ground floor of my house and my desktop PC is on a desk directly above this phone line. Could the desktop PC be causing interference with the phone line? I just don't want to move it without making sure because I don't have much space to move it TO and I don't want to waste my time.

I'm not actually sure what router and such I have, only that I have the one that came with the Sky package.

A failing power supply can cause havoc with the ADSL signal, are you sure it is the PC and not the monitor?

Try moving the PC to another room as far away from it's current location and see if it still happens.

Is there a fax/modem in the desktop which is connected to the phone system? If so, it must be fitted with a filter, otherwise it will act just like an unfiltered phone when it is switched on.

      Regards,

      Felix

Re: Internet Dies Every Time I Turn on Desktop PC

I have moved the PC to another room and switched it on without a monitor even connected up and I get the same problem. I've also tried moving the router to the phone line on the other side of the house, no change.

And no, the desktop isn't connected to the phone system in any way.

I would bet it was the PSU in the PC causing interference in the mains. How old is the PC?

I'll admit I got it off ebay but the seller seemed good and it was advertised as brand new... Oh god.

Sometimes even new PSU's have problems. On the bright side, they are easy to swap and usually not too expensive.

Contact the seller and see if he can give you the spec and refund cost when you return the faulty one to him.

Blegh... I suppose I'll have to do that. It's a hassle though, but I guess when a seller is good someone has to be the one person to get faulty equipment. I'll contact them and see what happens.

Re: Internet Dies Every Time I Turn on Desktop PC

The seller is being pretty insistent that there is no way that the PC would work at all if it was related to the PSU and can't think of any other reason why this problem would happen...

Re: Internet Dies Every Time I Turn on Desktop PC

He is wrong. A PSU will continue to power a PC even if it is faulty under certain circumstances. One thing you may want to try is running it through a surge protector, this may 'clean up' the current and stop the interference. You should always use a surge protector anyway to protect your equipment, so it is not a wasted purchase, even if it does not work.
