How do I connect to my neighbour's router?

      Hi All,
      I have couple of questions....

      (1) I want to connect to my next-door-neighbour's Netgear (non-Sky) router so we can share a printer. How do I do this? We both have a wireless router only and no wireless adapters.

      (2) I want to install a NAS device (buffallo maybe) so we have a central storage area for me and my neighbour (see above) and the kids when they get their wireless laptops for christmas. Is this possible with the sky router? How hard is it for a novice to do?

      (3) I've been reading about NetStumbler. Can I use this with the sky router to see what wireless networks are near my house? Or do I need a wireless adapter?

      Cheers,
      beadlenet

      1) Not if you're using a Sky router - both devices need to either support WDS or at least bridging which this box doesn't.

      2) Can't be done with the Sky router.

      3) Net stumbler is software which runs on your computer and for which you'll require a wireless card, it's nothing to do with the router - and the Sky router probably wouldn't work with it if it was

Re: How do I connect to my neighbour's router?

@greyrider - Thanks for the quick response.

      (1) OK so could he use a wireless adapter to join my network to use my printer or will it still need a bridge? (excuse my lack of networking knowledge).

      (2) So I might have to use a different router to have NAS on my home network? I was fancying the Draytek Vigor 2800xxx and staying with Pipex before I took up sky's offer.

      (3) Again, I could use a wireless adapter to look around the neighbourhood.

      Thanks for your help.

Re: How do I connect to my neighbour's router?

Ahh - I see that Netgear have a SAN device that takes 2x 3.5" hard drives and can mirror them.
Does anyone know if it works 100% with the sky router?
From what I have read, it should work if you have the DNS function of the router turned on (the default setting).
      cheers.

Re: How do I connect to my neighbour's router?

As far as i know it should work with any router
if your neighbour got a wireless card, connected to your network, browsed to the NAS server in windows, it should display on his pc.

Its just like running a windows server on your network, u can connect to it no matter what the router is.

Or if you wanted to bridge both of the networks, im sure you can buy a wireless bridge seperately
      hope this helps!

Re: How do I connect to my neighbour's router?

      @Edwardw
Thanks for your reply - I asked the question because sky have changed the router firmware from the standard Netgear version and just wanted to make sure.
However, The Netgear SC101 gets bad reviews on Amazon, due to the need to install software/drivers on each PC on the network that wants to connect to it. This puts me off a little.
