      DG834GT firmware

Having problems with the slow download speeds of the router - just like everyone else it seems...and Technical support at Sky are as much use as a bagful of monkeys at a fancy dress party...

Anyway...after reading some posts here, i've done some tweaks to my broadband connection including using the TCP Optimiser, and now want to upload new firmware to the router.

I've downloaded ver 1.02.04 (current version is 1.01.28). Once in the router setup and using the upload facility I get an error screen that says its the wrong type for the router??

      ...any ideas, please?

That's because your trying to install the Netgear generic version over the sky version!

You cannot do it via the routers interface, Netgear provide a simple program to do it!

      Just download this:

      ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/dg...ry_utility.zip

Use that to install the firmware, the firmware can be found here:

      ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/dg834gt_1_02_04.img

If you ever want to flash back to sky's firmware use the same tool but use the sky firmware which is located on your routers cd rom!

      Re: DG834GT firmware

You need to take the power lead out of the router, hold down the reset button and then plug the power lead back in (2 lights will flash).

Then use the recovery utility on the netgear website to load the firmware.

Please note by doing this you may be breaking Sky's T&C's. In my own opinion there is no benifit for doing this unless you are using the router with an alternative broadband supplier as it only really locks the username/password and a couple other small features.

      @bobbly

Welcome to the forum - nice positive first post

No, everyone is not "having problems with the slow download speeds of the router".

As far as anyone has been able to tell there are no performance differences between the Sky firmware and the standard Netgear firmware. Obviously the evidence is anecdotal, you'll find a handful of posts where people who have flashed feel they can see benefits. You'll find an equal number where no differences can be found.

You say the current version is 1.01.28? That's an earlier Netgear version. The current Sky version is 1.02.28.

      Re: DG834GT firmware

      Thanks for the responses...

If there's no need to change the firmware, I won't - just saw it as an opportunity to update the 'driver' - but i guess from the posts, the firmware isn't a driver as such?
it may be that router has 1.02.28 on it - was typing from memory (on a diff pc now) - but saw netgears upgrade had performance updates on it and so thought it'd help with the speed issue.

Other users have replaced the sky router with another make, but before i do that, i wanted to see how to get the most out of this router - still open to suggestions on this?

As for the firewall - i've installed the Macafee stuff from the CD (another 'no no', so i've read?), otherwise the firewall on the router is as it came out the box. Can you advise what i need to change there?

      Many thanks

It shouldnt be, the current Sky version is V1.03.87. Have you flashed it before with non-Sky firmware? This would block Sky's update.

It is the stats that are needed, speedtests tell you nothing.
