I have tried the above (many times, including'saving the changes'!) without success. Each time, when I re-check 'Enable POP' it has remined unset. Doubtless this is why I am still unable to connect Thunderbird, although it is puzzling that Outlook Express works OK.
Any comments much appreciated.

OK. This works fine when OE / Windows Mail have also been configured. However, Avast! AV does NOT scan the incoming / outgoing e-mails using this setup. Is there any way around this?

Sorry I don't use Avast. Maybe it needs enabling within the settings.

Try asking the question in our email forums?

Newsreader. I have a query running in the forums. I can find no settings in Avast! which allow a choice of ports for email. It was my view that people should be aware of the danger of using Avast! with the $ky / Google POP forwarding setup. Many threads appear to recommend the use of Avast! / AVG. They both suffer from the same problem I believe.

I use Thuderbird and it works fine just dont forget to use secure authorization and follow the instructions below from sky.

They do work because I followed them and have been using Thunderbird with sky email for ages.

1. Open Thunderbird and select Tools followed by Account Settings.
2. Click Add Account.
3. Select the Email account radio button and click Next.

The Identity screen appears.

4. Enter your full name in the Your Name field.
5. Enter your full Sky Email address (username@sky.com) in the Email Address field and click Next.
6. Choose the type of incoming server you wish to use.
7. The server type you chose at the previous step will determine which incoming mail server settings you need to input:
Incoming server: pop.tools.sky.com
Incoming server: imap.tools.sky.com
8. Set the Outgoing Server to smtp.tools.sky.com and click Next.
9. Enter your Sky Email username (including @sky.com) in the Incoming Username and Outgoing Username fields and click Next.
10. Enter a name for your email account in the Account Name field and click Next.
11. Verify your account information in the dialogue box and click Finish.
12. Select Server Settings from the folder list below your new account.
13. Update the Port value to either 995 for POP3 or 993 for IMAP.
14. In the Security Settings section, select SSL from the Use secure connection options.
15. Select Check for messages at startup and Automatically download new messages 16. Click Outgoing Server (SMTP) in the folder list
17. Select the smtp.tools.sky.com (Default) entry from the list and click Edit. The SMTP Server page appears.
18. Enter smtp.tools.sky.com as the Server Name and set the Port to 465.
19. Select Username and password and enter your Sky Email username (including @sky.com) in the Username field.
20. Select SSL from the Use secure connection radio buttons and click OK.
21. Click OK to save your changes and exit the Account Settings dialogue.

Remember when setting up smtp then if not access first time go to smtp settings section of account manager and click edit and in box where it says use username and password then select it and enter your email address username again then ok it. Download emails again and it should ask for password. Enter it and hey presto emails.

Help!

Trying to set up Outlook to receive my emails. It can receive but not send. Have rang sky who cannot help.
I keep getting the following message

Task 'pophost.123-reg.co.uk - Sending' reported error (0x800CCC7D) : 'Your outgoing (SMTP) server does not support SSL-secured connections. If SSL-secured connections have worked in the past, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

I don't have a sky email account but just want to use outlook to send and receive emails to my new email account!

I am trying to set up Outlook Express but having followed all of the instructions I get this message:

Hi
I AM TRYING TO CHANGE TO OUTLOOK 2003 BUT WHEN I TRY TO ENABLE POP IN SKY EMAIL I GET THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE (WHICH AS A NON TECHNICAL TYPE I FIND A BIT CONCERNING, ESPECIALLY AS I DONT USE GOOGLE EMAIL) AFTER I CLICK ON THE SKY EMAIL ICON I GET:
"Secure Connection Failed
mail.tools.sky.com uses an invalid security certificate.
The certificate is only valid for mail.google.com.
This could be a problem with the server's configuration, or it could be someone trying to impersonate the server.
HOW DO I GET PAST THIS POINT?
CHEERS

Thanks hale for your tips. I tried many times with this problem and had no success. I even tried yours using a pop setup but agin it didn't work. In my Sky mail settings the enable POP did not keep it's setting it kepy losing it for some strange reason. Anyway I changed from pop to imap and enabled it and it stayed endabled! From here on I deleted my previous pop account in Thunderbird and set up a new one with imap and it worked! For all those people who are struggling out ther try the imap route, it appears to work when sky mail will not remember your pop settings.
