Thanks. This helped me resolve my problem which I and many others were getting sending e-mails using vista.I was getting the following message "Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Subject 'Re: People Source Consulting', Account: 'Windows Mail', Server: 'smtp.sky.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10053, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F"
Thanks once again.

The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the "I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

The rejected e-mail address was 'my.username@sky.com'. Subject '', Account: 'pop.tools.sky.com', Server: 'smtp.tools.sky.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '530 5.5.1 Authentication Required w40sm3052849ugc.45', Port: 465, Secure(SSL): Yes, Server Error: 530, Error Number: 0x800CCC78

I got it to work using these settings thank you.

few notes from mistakes I made
1. Tick the outgoing server box at the bottom of the server tab
2. when asked to authenticate with username and password, type in full e-mail address.
3. remember to input 465 and 995 or it wouldn't work

Thank you so much for all this help

For the past two days I have had this:

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'pop.tools.sky.com', Server: 'pop.tools.sky.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

I have not changed any settings and in my Windows Mail settings are exactly as above. Does anyone have any idea what to do? I have tried reinstalling the email account without success. I can't understand why this has happened.

hi there,
i'm still not getting it! i've followed these instructions by the letter but when i check 'send and receive messages', windows mail asks me for my logon username and password (which by the way is unticked in account properties), i type in my correct details (full email address and password) and click ok and i can't get through that bit to where it actually downloads your messages. any help would be a relief! cheers.

Set yourself up a hotmail account and go to sky.com and open your email.Go to settings and in the tab go to forwarding. Have all your sky email saved in hotmail and you can respond via hotmail or sky. SO MUCH EASIER.

Why does this thing not work? I have tried all the ways.
It says:

I called Sky because my Windows Mail - which had previously been working fine for nine or ten months - stopped working. I called the appalingly bad Sky helpline (have these people got any IT knowledge at all?) and I was informed that Sky are aware of the fact, and that I should try it again in a few weeks(!?).
I suspect the reason they don't want to correct it is because they want you to use the Sky portal to access your email.

I too have been using windows mail for 12 months+ now with no problems then all of a sudden I get the logon screen. Just closing it without filling the details worked for a while but now nothing. I have reset the mail settings countless times now and it still won't work. How about a techie from Sky getting in touch and helping out. I spend enough money with this company and have done for years

everything was fine until 5 weeks ago when I was unable to receive emails through windows mail, although I can send ok and if I send one to myself it arrives no prob. I have reset up my system exactly as above but still no joy, although if I enable pop for all messages and save, I can receive just the existing messages, and need to do that each time. My pc has Vista and windows mail but my old laptop with XP and outlook express has developed exactly the same fault. Anyone got any suggestions?

I have tried all the methods described andnone of them have worked, niether on my Windows XP Desktop computer nor on my Windows Vista laptop. After hours on the phone to sky help line I was told that sky had fulfilled their contract obligations and did not guarantee that their e-mail would be compatible with third party e-mail programs, i.e. Outlook 2003 and Vista Windows Mail.
Needless to say after the help from sky I will be moving to a different Broadband provider once my contract minimum time has been reached,

The tutorial is spot on, but anyone who still has problems go to www.sky.com/unlock and follow the instructions there, if this fails ring sky and ask them to unlock at their end then repeat the unlock process you just tried, everything should now work fine.

I'm trying to set this up in Windows Mail on Vista for my dad. He can access his mail through the Sky Portal fine, but having followed the instructions to the letter I still cannot get it to work in WM. Keep getting the box up asking for user name and password. When I followed the link to unlock, using the same user name and password, it said they don't match! Can't win!

Joined Sky this week and been struggling to set up Windows Mail/Vista following the tutorials etc. I follow it to the letter but can't get past the sign in box. Just get server has rejected your log in. Invalid credentials, even though I know they're not! Tried Sky tech support who point me to the 'unlock' instructions which makes no difference. So will try Darren's suggestion above as last hope. What a pain!

I was having all the problems above!
Make sure you go to - tools/accounts/properties/servers tab -
Then tick the 'my server requires authentication' then in the settings, type your full sky email and password.
I couldnt get it to work untill I did that!

After many hours messing around, using the advise on this forum from Keith I went onto the 'www.sky.com/unlock' page. After entering my user name and password it said that my user name and password don't match...So I went into my sky e-mail using the sky portal and changed my password. I then went back into the unlock page, entered my user name with the new password. Hey presto, it accepted me in and did the unlock. Went back into Outlook 2007, followed the set up procedure as described above and....VIOLA! All working fine. Many thanks to all the contributors on this forum and I hope my little bit of advise as to changing your password and then using the unlock facility is helpful.
