Update to Sky+ app lets Sky customers use iPhone and iPod touch to change channels, as well as play, pause and rewind TV

13th November 2012 – Sky+ continues to improve the way we watch TV by today unveiling an update to the Sky+ app that transforms the iPhone and iPod touch into a remote control, following these features being introduced on Sky+ for iPad earlier this year.

The latest update to the Sky+ app for iPhone means people can now use the app to change channels as they watch live TV, and even pause, play and rewind TV with a simple swipe or tap of their finger on the screen of their phone. The app now also offers Sky TV customers full access to their Sky+ planner through their iPhone, meaning that people can browse all their existing recordings on their Sky+HD set-top box, as well as set up and delete recordings on their planner - all without interrupting viewing on the main TV.

All Sky customers need to do to enjoy the latest extra features is connect their Sky+HD box to the same WiFi network as their iOS device. Sky customers are already able to enjoy the remote control function and access to their Sky+ planner on iPad, and the new features will be coming to Android handsets in the coming months.

The new update is just the most recent addition to the popular Sky+ app, which makes it really simple and easy to find out about and plan great TV to watch. Other useful features of the app include being able to browse the entire week’s TV from a smartphone through a user-friendly TV Guide, as well as remote record both individual programmes and entire series through the app while away from home – meaning Sky customers never need miss a single episode of their favourite TV show or series ever again.

Launched in 2009, the Sky+ app has been downloaded more than 5 million times and now attracts an average of more than 1.2 million unique users each month. The app sits alongside a range of leading mobile apps available to Sky customers at no extra charge, including the award-winning Sky Go. Offering Sky customers easy and convenient access to up to 43 channels live and on demand through both 3G and WiFi connections, Sky Go is available across a range of internet-connected devices including iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and selected Android smartphones.

Luke Bradley-Jones, Brand Director, TV Products, comments: “People use their phones as a one-stop-shop to manage virtually every aspect of their lives - whether organising their diary, checking their bank balance or paying bills - so why not use it to control their TV too? Having received great feedback about these features when we introduced them to the Sky+ app for iPad earlier this year, it’s great to now be making them available on iPhone too, which is obviously the ideal size for use as a remote control.

“Combined with the convenience of also being able to remotely record programmes from their phone while out and about, the Sky+ app is cementing its position as the ultimate TV gadget, helping millions of our customers get more great value from their Sky subscription both in and out of the home.”

Fed up with Sky being in bed with Apple. Its about time they started including Android devices in this, the piecemeal support at the moment is ludicrous.
Sky News just seems to be one big Apple endorsement, with all the presenters sat there plugging their Ipads.
I hope I live to see the day when the apple cart overturns.....and relax, rant over!
