wireless network connected but no internet

I have a laptop that is wirelessly connected to my sky router by a DLink G650+ wireless PCMCIA card with an excellent signal strength however I can not get online. the wireless network connection status window shows that I am sending not receiving any activity.

When I try with my daughters laptop which has wireless built in it sees the network but wont allow to connect instead stating " acquiring network address"

I have also tried disconnecting the network cable from my pc and using the inbuilt wireless connection to connect with the same results as above.

I know my daughters laptop works as my brother in law and father in law both have sky broadband and it connects to thiers with no problems.

      Dodgy router??

      Please help..

      I am loosing my sanity

p.s. Why can't they make these things more user friendly?

Talking Re: wireless network connected but no internet

      Hi there guys,

I have been struggling with this same problem for 4 months now, and would be so grateful if you could help me out of my predicament.

I have the sky router, and have it plugged in with the ethernet cable, which works fine.

Unfortunately when I remove the cable, it says that the wireless sky network is connected with full reception, but it won't load any pages.

I am using a Nintendo DS and Wii on the wireless, which both work fine, so it's really frustrating me that I can't get my laptop to follow suit.

I have followed the above step, and still no joy.

Please can you give a techno-numpty a hand!!

I will supply all details that will help in the matter!

      Please be my saviour!!

Right click My Network Places on Start Menu
      Choose Properties
Right Click your Local Area Connection
In the General tab Double click Internet Protocol
Tick obtain an IP address automatically
Tick obtain DNS server address automatically
Click OK all open boxes to exit
Now you should be able to connect

Re: wireless network connected but no internet

Sounds as if you know more than average about wireless so forgive me if this seems a bit simplistic.

Suggest that you start by talking to the router via the wired connection.

Into the address bar of your browser (Internet Explorer ?) type 192.168.0.1 which is the address of the router. You should see a sign-in box and enter the word admin and the password sky. You should then be in Netgear settings and be able to make adjustments.

First turn off security (WEP and WPA) and log out.

If the wireless adapter's site survey interface shows a signal from the Sky router see if you can now connect (usually by clicking on the SkyXXXX entry).

Other things you may have to change:

      Disable the Netgear uPnP setting.

The wireless frequency (e.g.if you are on channel 1 and a neighbour is on channel 3, move to Channel 8 or further).

Cordless or mobile phones, video sender or the other wireless devices you mention should be turned off while setting up your wireless system.

      Later restore WEP or WPA.

Smile Re: wireless network connected but no internet

      Hi guys,

Thanks a million for your help with this, and I have tried your advice, but to no avail.
      What is happening when I unplug my ethernet cable, is that it is coming up with a yellow triangle in the bottom left of the screen, and this message comes up;

      Windows - System Error
There is an IP address conflict with another system on the network.

I would really appreciate some more advice on this, I know I'm getting closer!

      Cheers guys.

Yep we get that one not often, try run cmd ipconfig /renew and enter then press exit to leave the screen, then see if you can connect.

Re: wireless network connected but no internet

Thanks so much for your help sassylady, but even after taking your advice, it is still not working for me.
Any other hints that might resolve this before my laptop meets my wall at speed!
      Thanks all
