Disable "Allow Broadcast of Name" Now cant be seen ??

      Hi all

I know the tittle sound kinda daft...

      Let me explain..

Previously i had my desktop computer (Wired) running XP and my laptop (wireless) running XP too.
I had the "Allow Broadcast of Name" enabled so the laptop could be seen on my network and then connected to it. Then once connected i could dissable the "Allow Broadcast of Name" and it would still stay connected just as you would of thought..No problems!

      But now......

I have just upgraded to Windows Vista! On both the Desktop pc AND the laptop, Both running the same identical OS. But now i cant dissable the "Allow Broadcast of Name" In my wireless settings without loosing my connection on the laptop, For some reason i HAVE to have it enabled so the laptop can see it... I could switch this offf before and still stay connected on the laptop...

What could i be missing ? is there a setting i need to change ?

      Hope someone can help..

Thanks for reading (sorry if i went on)

While im not sure without re-installing my Vista beta cleint on xp at least you can manauly create the wifi profile and simply set the SSID without having the router broadcasting it. This should solve the problem and is prity straight forward to do (in xp at least)

If I were you I wouldn't waste your time, hiding your SSID means nothing. It adds no value security wise. Ensuring you have at least WPA (preferably WPA2) with a decent alpha numeric password is much more worth while.

oh, and to answer your orignal question, i could be an **** and say google is your friend but :

go to Network Sharing Center -> Manage Wireless Networks

right click on your network in the list and click properties.

then select "connect even if network is not broadcasting"

Absolutely right - but you'd be surprised the number of times I still see people saying "disable ssid to make you more secure". It's a bit like telling someone that they can make their house secure by removing the number from the front door!

Yes, it's just a pity that that netgear doesn't support AES. Yet.
