      Wirleless Problems

      Hi Everyone,

      Can anyone help......

My parents have recently purchased a new desktop pc and as they has sky they decided to take up sky broadband too.
They received notification that their line was active at 2mb and received both the sky broadband router and net gear usb wireless dongle.
Today i went round and installed the software supplied from sky and then the software for their netgear usb dongle. But unfortunately nothing happened no Internet nothing although the router had the wireless light lit green and permanent and also the Internet light again green and permanent.
So i rang sky customer service and was told to re-set the router and re-start the pc and on doing this an Internet connection was established , for about thirty seconds then gone.
So re-start the router , take out the dongle and replace re-start the pc and Internet connection again comes on and then surprise surprise goes again too within around thirty seconds.
When you check what the netgear dongle is doing it keeps stating acquiring network address and then disconnects and starts over.
Tonight they again telephoned sky customer service but this time were told to leave the pc on for ten days with the usb dongle attached , as it's new it needs time to settle!!!!!! rubbish......
Also the router lights for the Internet and wireless occasionally will flicker then go solid again so not sure if that might be the problem here.
So please help they are driving me insane trying to get on the Internet but i have tried everything i can think off and to no avail, and every forum on the Internet seems to have posts with the same or similar problems.
Also is it true that you can only use the adsl router supplied from sky and not any other..clutching at straws to get them some results.
Cheers for any help or advise you can give

Their pc is using windows xp home if that is any help

Is it practical to connect the PC by ethernet, even if only temporarily for troubleshooting?

      Re: Wirleless Problems

That was my idea today (before finding this forum for help) but after speaking to sky customer services i didnt think it would make a great deal of difference as they clearly have no idea if any at all in how to solve the problem.
But i will do that tommorow , is there anything i should look out for when doing this which could help in finding a solution to the wireless problem?

      Re: Wirleless Problems

I would suggest removing the Netgear wireless software and use Windows to configure the connection. Change wireless mode from Auto 108 to G only. Experiment with different wireless channels.

      Re: Wirleless Problems

lnb, well i did what you said (it was set to g and b) and for a couple of hours all was well....no breaks in connection and very stable. Powered the pc up and down several times and all seemed ok.
Then just out of nothing , gone again and very unstable again. So really not sure what is wrong, last night they had no connection at all.
So if you could give me any more help it would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry for late reply, my boss is an ogre and cracks the whip until 1800!

The next thing I would try would be a static IP address, see here http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/view-static.html
