This netgear software is from the wireless adapter on the laptop I'm assuming? No I don't know it. Have you tried reinstalling it? (or removing it and using XPs built-in wireless - SP2 has pretty good wireless handling)

So ipconfig shows an ip address but this netgear software doesn't?

When you go to http://192.168.0.1 what happens?

Netgear software is from the adaptor. Yes ipconfig is showing an ip address but software isnt. When I go to http://192.168.0.1 it just says ie cannot display the web page. No I havent tried re installing or trying xp for wireless but I will, I just thought with getting no connectin when wired it must be something else.

When trying it wired, did you disable/remove the wireless adapter?

      also try
      ipconfig /release
      ipconfig /renew

(I admit I'm a bit puzzled with this one)

Yes I disabled and removed the wireless adaptor to try it wired. I tried the ip config release and renew and got erroe message "an errror occured while renewing interface sky broadband : unable to contact your DHCP server request timed out. I also tried a system restore to before internet wouldnt work with no joy. I am totally baffled ,will try re setting the connection but pretty sure it wont work thanks for all your help.

      Hmm. Tried rebooting the router?

Look in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services and check DHCP Client and DNS Client - they should be both set to Automatic and Started (if you get stuck and don't know what that means ask ).

      Try this
How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) in Windows XP
      and/or this
Can't browse web/ recieve email even though you're connected? (Repair/Reset Winsock settings)

Hmm. A right stumper... need to sleep on this one I think.

Do you have a Recovery Disk for the laptop? (we may be heading towards a clean install I fear) Is there much on it that you would need to keep/backup?

Re: Wireless used to work but not anymore

Surprising what a good nights sleep can do woke up this morning and remembered that my daughter had said she had clicked a message from mcafee last Sat, so this morning uninstalled mcafee and bingo internet works again. So they say you learn something new every day. I never thought my internet protection would stop me going on internet totally without telling me there was a problem. I had shut the prog down but never thought to uninstall it. Anyway thanks again for your help, now my son can carry on surfing and get off my case.

Re: Wireless used to work but not anymore

Good news and apologies. I thought I had asked about firewalls. Oh well. But yeah, a fresh look at something is always valuable

Amusing how it was the firewall that Sky pushes...

Try Zone Alarm, Kerio, or Comodo (google them) if you would like a replacement firewall for free.

Or you could try reinstalling McAfee fresh.
