      Connection problems with 3rd pc

Hi wonder if anyone can provide some assistance.

I have been up and running on Sky broadband for about a month now. Our laptop and one desktop pc connect no problem but a third desktop pc can only hold an internet connection if no other pc's are connected at the same time. If there is another pc connected the internet connection wavers on and off every few seconds.

I am using Netgear WG111 54mbps wireless adaptors on both desktops. I have swapped them over to make sure there is no problem with the adaptors.

I am on Sky basic and wondered whether I needed to upgrade but Sky's techinical support won't give me any advice because we have connection on the other pc's!

      Any advice would be appreciated.

      Thanks

      Alison

OK - starting with some basics: the IP addresses. (I'll move onto ARP later )

Can you open up a command prompt and type the following at the prompt of all three machines: "ipconfig /all" (without the quotes) and paste the results? Then we can see if it's an IP address problem such as duplicate addreses.

Thank you. The result for PC3 is interesting:

Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection 2:

It shows that the PC is not connected. Can you connect it wirelessly and then re-run the ipconfig /all again please?

Re: Connection problems with 3rd pc

Hmmmm - your comment that "it took me an hour to get any connection at all tonight even though all the other pc's were switched off" would seem to indicate that the problem does not relate to the other PCs?

The thing that I notice is that PC 3 is allocated the same IP address as PC 2. Given that PC 2 is off, it may be nothing, but I would have expected the adderss to be 192.168.0.4. Have you made any changes to the DHCP server settings? Better still, let's check them anyway. Can you log into the router http://192.168.0.1, user name "admin", password "sky" and click on the LAN IP Setup. You should have a tick in the "Use router as DHCP server option" and two IP addresses: a start and an end address. Can you let me know what they are please? Also, are there any rows in the "Address Reservation" section. (I admit that I'm expecting this all to be default, but best to check anyway.)

BTW, If anyone else has instant ideas as to the solution (other than dodgy wireless card on PC 3), please do chip in.

Re: Connection problems with 3rd pc

Yes the use router as DHCP box is ticked

      Starting IP 192.168.0.2

      Ending IP 192.168.0.254

I have checked wireless adaptor by swapping it with the one from the other pc so that's not the problem.

When unable to connect and I try to "repair connection" I got a message tonight saying it was an IP address renewal problem if that is any help.

Re: Connection problems with 3rd pc

You beat me to my next test.

I take it that when you say that you swapped the wireless card, you mean that PC 3 still had the same problem? Assuming so, let's see if it is a DHCP problem...

Can you try giving the card on PC 3 a static IP address. How about 192.168.0.203? (OK, it is the DHCP range which isn't "best practice", but it suffices as a good test assuming that you don't have anything else on the network with the same address!)

      So, you'll need:
      IP: 192.168.0.203
      Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
      Gateway: 192.168.0.1

      Primary DNS server: 192.168.0.1
      Secondary DNS: leave blank.

      Does that work?

Re: Connection problems with 3rd pc

When I logged on tonight I got an internet connection almost right away for a change even though all 3 pc's were on. The IP address was 192.168.0.4 as you thought it should have been last night. I have changed to the static ip address ending 203 anyway and the connection is still going strong.

Will let you know over the next few days if this has fixed the problem.

      Thanks for all your help.
