I too had to register just so I can say a huge THANK YOU!!!!
I am a very new Sky customer. To be honest, wasn't particularly interested in the TV side, but wanted the broadband as my (very near) exchange is unbundled for EasyNet/Sky.
Anyway, over ethernet I was getting speeds of between 10.5 and 11.5 Mbps. I was pretty damn happy with this, especially coming from a 512Kbps connection.
However, I had bought an Asus PCI wireless adaptor in readiness, as ideally would like to run wireless so that cabling does not dictate room layout. However, I was testing at only between 1.5 & 4 Mbps when using wireless. It seemed to go up and down within this range a lot.
Also, whether using wired or wireless I was constantly having to reboot the router as it was always losing connection.
1st guy I spoke to at Sky was of no help what so ever. Regarding the speed over wireless problem he refused to offer any help as the wireless adaptor being used was not supplied by Sky. Regarding the router reboot problem he refused any help as it was on a telephone extension (because the wireless was not good enough to have the router at the socket!!!).
2nd guy was a bit more helpful, in that he went through the same steps that I had and proving that the router seemed to be working ok & connecting at decent speeds, and proving that the wireless adaptor seemed to be working ok and connecting to the router at decent speeds. But then just hit a brick wall when asked "so what next?".
Anyway, I found this post and I ran the util against both the wireless card & the lan card. The result?
Now getting wireless speed results up to 12Mbps & wired up to 14 Mbps.
On top of this, it has now been over 24 hours with no router reboot!
I am now one VERY happy person.
Do you think it'd be worthwhile nagging at Sky to maybe add this to there knowledge base? IT could then be used at the tech help's discretion. I.e. if they can quite clearly tell that the user is reasonably it savvy, then suggest that this has helped others (i.e. at no responsibility of Sky)? I certainly think it'd be a wise move. Before finding this thread, I had found LOADS of posts slagging of Sky due to speed issues & router reboot issues.
TBH, I am so far pretty pleased with the move to Sky. Other than the unhelpful 1st tech guy I spoke to & the dish installation guy (contracted obviously), I have had no problems at all so far. In fact, I would go so far as to say I have received a service quite above expectations, and I have even called there customer support to tell them this.
Once again big thanks for this invaluable utility.
