Would there be a conflict if the desktop was switched off. I've just selected the "repair" option and it is trying to renew the IP address, without any luck. This has got to be a setting within the laptop.

Have you got 1 PC and a laptop?

you need to give your laptop a static ip for your wireless adaptor.

      your router will be 192.168.0.1

go into the netgear admin page to locate the ip address of your desktop and change your laptop so that there is no conflict.
