      Security set-up for noobs?

Am a total noob with wifi & the tutorial sticky is rather old.
I only ever used wifi for the first few weeks after getting a connection & that was with everything on default settings.
      It's been disabled since then.

I'll be connecting just my sky box via wifi soon & wanted to know how to make sure it's secure.
I've already changed the network key to a random one of my own, but is there anything else i should be doing?

Security option is currently set to WPA/WPA2-PSK (Mixed Mode).
      WPA encryption is TKIP+AES.
      SSID is default.
All other boxes under 'Wireless Access Point' are unchecked.

      Thanks in advance.

      Re: Security set-up for noobs?

The only thing I would do is change the encryption to WPA2-PSK(AES). I would also tick Allow Broadcast of Name, which makes it easier for devices in your network to connect. There is really no security advantage in having this unticked and it makes setting up your devices more complicated.

Good advice, tailored for a noob.
      Thanks Isitme.

(I assume you mean change the security option to WPA2-PSK(AES) because for WPA encryption, i only have TKIP+AES or AES as options to choose from).

      edit
      Nevermind.
WPA encryption options disappear when WPA2-PSK(AES) is enabled.
      Doh! noob.

If you change to WPA2 it should automatically select AES, as TKIP is not supported.

      Yes, sorry.
I made an edit up there^.
It doesn't change to AES but the options merely disappear.

Currently at a noob fest in noob city, wearing noob boots.

      Re: Security set-up for noobs?

All securely set up now, thanks Isitme.

This thread was supposed to be about security, however i do feel the need to post my quite interesting findings...

While setting up the wifi connection to my DRX890 sky+HD box (via SD501 mini connectior) i also had my Sagem 2504n router interface open & was regularly refreshing the relevant page.

Firstly, on the sky box scan, the top rated router was a BT home hub at 100% signal strength!
The next one down was mine, at 50%.
Within a few seconds of choosing mine, the BT hub had disappeared from the list & mine was now at 66%.

After finishing the set-up & exiting that screen, the sky box was only showing approx 10% on the signal strength bar so i decided to do a test download from on demand:
      Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle - BBC2HD - 1.31GB.
I timed this at just under 13 minutes, which according to my calculations is 17.3Mbps.

My current router stats show 21419kbps downstream & wired speed tests come in at 18.7Mbps, so i'm only losing 1.5Mbps using wireless, compared to ethernet.

The sky box does show 70% on the signal strength bar now & has done for 2hrs, however my PS3 which is 30cm from the sky box & 40 cm from the SD501 connector shows 100%.
The router has stayed on channe 6 throughout.

      Conclusion?
At ADSL speeds, there's nothing wrong with the DRX890, SD501 connector, or Sagem 2504n wireless performance.
Nor indeed the sky/BBC on demand servers.
      Excellent.
